
Spring Tennis Begins with Trip to No. 5 UNC For Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team gears up for the Spring season Tuesday evening when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face off against nationally-ranked North Carolina at 6:30 p.m. The Tar Heels entered the season ranked No. 5 in the country.
The Wildcats enter their fourth year in the Atlantic 10 and first season under the guidance of head coach Susanne Depka, who was promoted this summer from assistant coach the past three seasons to replace Sarah Anundsen. Anundsen was named the head coach at Virginia.
The matchup against UNC will be the eighth since 1995 and most recent since 2009, with UNC having won all seven meetings. Davidson twice opened up against the Tar Heels in 2005 and 2006. This will be the highest ranked opponent the Wildcats have faced to start a season since taking on No. 34 N.C. State in 2012.

The Davidson women's tennis program will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Susanne Depka after she took over for Sara Anundsen, who was named head coach at Virginia for its women's tennis team this past summer. Depka is very familiar with the program after serving as the assistant coach the past three seasons.
It was another stellar season for the Wildcats last year. The squad went 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while sporting a 15-6 record overall. It was the third straight year with double-digit wins and in the past two seasons now the 'Cats have collected 33 victories overall.
This year's club returns eight of its 10 letterwinners from a year ago, including all six starters who won 10 or more matches. Leading the way is three-time A-10 All-First Teamer Anna Catharine Feaster, while joining her is 2016 first-team pick Ava Todd and second-team picks the past two seasons Megan Scholvinck (2017), Alexandra Abele (2017) and Gabrielle Centenari (2016). In addition, the Wildcats welcome three newcomers, as it all adds up to what coach Depka and the Wildcats hope to be another successful season.
Singles
For the third consecutive season, the Wildcats hit the 70-win mark in singles as a team, collecting 78 last year after earning 79 in 2017 and 76 in 2016. Of those 78 a year ago, a school-best 31 of which came against Atlantic 10 foes, the most in league. All six starters hit the double-digit win total, led by Alexandra Abele's 16 as a freshman last season.
•Senior Anna Catharine Feaster: The Wildcats' top singles player, named to the Atlantic 10 All-First Team for the third year in a row ... named the A-10 Player of Week once for sixth career weekly awards ... went 13-6 overall in singles with a 4-2 mark in the A-10 ... registered an 11-5 record at No. 1 singles ... closed out the season on a strong note, going 4-1 in last five matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 first round victory against St. Bonaventure at the A-10 Championship ... went 8-0 at home ... currently riding a 10-match win streak at home dating back to end of 2016.
•Senior Ally Sexton: Did not see any action in singles last year ... has a career mark of 5-5 in singles.
•Senior Ava Todd: Registered another stellar season a year ago, recording a 15-5 singles record at No. 4-6 ... remained undefeated in A-10 play for career in singles, going 7-0 to move to 17-0 in three seasons ... scored 12 of the singles wins at No. 5, while going 3-0 at No. 6 ... ran off a team season-high 11-match singles win streak before falling in fall match of the season to snap the streak ... eight of 16 overall wins came at home ... named A-10 All-First Team in 2016 and all-second team in 2015.
•Junior Gabrielle Centenari: One of six Wildcats to reach the 10-win mark in singles, finishing with a 10-9 record at No. 3 ... went 4-3 against A-10 foes ... ran off a three-match win streak against Appalachian State, Rhode Island and UNC Wilmington ... seven of 10 wins came at home ... named to league's all-second team in 2016 as a freshman.
•Junior Megan Scholvinck: Enjoyed a strong sophomore season, capped off by being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Second Team ... honored with team's Most Improved Award ... tabbed the league's player of the week once last year for second career weekly honor ... went a personal-best 12-7 in singles action, including 6-1 in league play, at No. 2 ... the sophomore had a career-high winning streak of four in singles ... played three matches at No. 1, going 1-2 ... opened the season winning first three singles matches ... won eight of 12 matches at home in singles.
•Sophomore Alexandra Abele: Enjoyed outstanding debut season by earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Second Team ... Five times was picked the league's rookie of the week, the most since the Wildcats have joined the A-10 ... registered a team-best 16-4 singles mark at No. 4 and 5, getting 14 of those wins at No. 4 ... rattled off an eight-match singles winning streak ... went 6-2 against A-10 foes in singles ... went 9-1 in home matches.
•Sophomore Samantha Armas: Had a nice debut season, going 12-6 in singles ... twice named the A-10 Rookie of the Week ... played at positions No. 4-6 in singles, going 11-4 at No. 6 spot ... had a five-match win streak, three of the victories coming at home ... went 4-2 in final six singles matches, including taking a 6-3, 6-4 win vs. Saint Louis in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship.
Newcomers
•Freshman Alyssa Hahn: Ellen Smith Maloney Award for most improved female tennis player in Richmond, Virginia ... Top 10 Mid-Atlantic ranking for 16s and 18s, Top 70 on tennis recruiting ranking ... earned Honor Roll all four years and was in National Honors Society.
•Freshman Nicole krykanov: Earned five letters while playing No. 1 at Cape Henry Collegiate ... 2016 VISAA II State Player of the Year ... all-conference and all-state picks in singles and doubles (2012-16) ... state champion, 2012-14 ... 2017 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year ... academically: Headmaster's List (6th-12th grade), National Honors Society, 2017 Scholar Athlete.
•Freshman Lindsay Song: Represented Alabama for five years in Southern Cup (playing No. 1 position in 2016) and represented the southern section for four years (playing at No. 1 position and leading team to the finals in 2015) ... reached the final 16 in the 2014 Girl 16's National Clay Courts Singles ... received Elaine Francis Sportsmanship Award at AL State Qualifier in 2016 ... reached a career high ranking of 928 in WTA circuit doubles ... career high Southern Ranking girls 18s: 14th.
Doubles
Davidson's doubles teams finished the 2017 season with 41 wins in 58 matches, netting 15 of those victories vs. A-10 foes. The 41 wins were the most since getting 48 in 2008. The Wildcats used just 4 different doubles lineups last year. They return every player from all three of their main doubles teams.
• No. 1 position: Armas and Scholvinck return after going 12-6 at the top spot ... they went 5-2 in A-10 matches ... rattled off a five-match win streak ... eight times did not give up more than two games in a match.
• No. 2 position: With a team-best 13 wins, Feaster and Sexton return at the No. 2 position ... The duo went 6-2 in league matches, also a team high ... closed season winning final three doubles matches, including a quarterfinal 6-0 win at the A-10 Championship against Saint Louis ... eight of the 13 wins came at home.
• No. 3 position: The Wildcats best doubles team returns in Abele and Todd after going an impressive 16-4 at No. 3 ... they were 4-4 in league matches ... opened the season by winning first six doubles matches, four of them at home ... also ran off a five-match win streak during the season ... seven times either blanked or gave up just one game in a set.
The Schedule
Davidson will open the season on the road at No. 5 North Carolina. This marks the first time it will open against the Tar Heels since the 2006 campaign, while the Wildcats are opening against this highest of a ranked since a matchup against No. 34 N.C. State in 2012.
Following that match, the Wildcats will embark on an eight-match homestand starting Jan. 27 against Gardner-Webb and running through Feb. 25 against Wingate. In between, they will face UNC Asheville, Presbyterian, Winthrop, UNC Wilmington, Elon and USC-Upstate.
A few other non-conference highlights include traveling to the USTA site in Florida, March 6, to take on Coastal Carolina and facing cross-county rival Charlotte, April 7. The Wildcats lead the all-time series vs. the 49ers, 17-14, but fell last season at home 4-3.
Atlantic 10 season begins on the trip to Florida with a matchup against Duquesne, march 5. Davidson will also face Saint Joseph's, UMass, Saint Louis, Richmond, George Washington and George Mason.
The A-10 Tournament takes place April 25-29 in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA National Campus. Davidson fell to Saint Louis last year in the quarterfinals after reaching the championship match against VCU in 2016 before falling. The Wildcats have a 5-3 record in the tournament since joining the league in 2014-15.
Last year's tournament winner was UMass, stopping a streak of four straight by the VCU Rams. Richmond has won the tournament title six times dating back to 2006.
