DAVIDSON, N.C. – Charlotte Calderwood's straight-set victory on court four proved to be the difference as Davidson held off Rhode Island, 4-3, in Atlantic 10 Conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon.
Winners of three straight, the Wildcats improve to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in league duals.
"Rhode Island is a tough team," said Davidson head coach Susanne Depka. "They never give up and have great defense. We pulled this one out with a lot of fight. We still need to become a little better mentally and continue to focus on our processes even when the score comes to mind. If we get better at this each match, we will be ready for the conference tournament."
The Wildcats grabbed the early 1-0 advantage by claiming two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Ellie Hammond and Calderwood picked up a convincing 6-1 decision at the No. 2 spot, while Olivia Hooper and Keri Rothenberg won 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles action, Davidson got straight set wins from Savanna Kollock (6-2, 6-0), Hammond (6-2, 6-4) and Calderwood (6-2, 7-5) to stay perfect in the A-10.
The Rams' points came from Nikki Fernando, Anastasia Pettersson and Miruna Scarlat.
