OLEAN, N.Y. — The Davidson men's tennis team opened its Spring season against No. 20 South Carolina, hanging tough before falling 6-1 in the end Saturday afternoon inside the Knobloch Tennis Center in front of a crowd of near 200.

The Wildcats (0-1) were hosting its highest seed to start the year since a matchup against No. 25 Clemson in 2015.

"The guys played really hard and well today against a nationally-ranked team," said head coach Drew Barrett. "We hung in there in all matches and can take this great experience and build off it as the season gets underway for us."

South Carolina (1-0) took the opening point with doubles wins of 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 1 and 3 positions. The duo of Shamael Chaudhry and David Hager were leading 5-1 at No. 2, but the point had been decided before they could finish.

Sophomore Thomas Mason collected the 'Cats' lone point on the afternoon with a solid 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.

Two other matches went to a third set. Chaudhry at No. 2 singles forced an extra set by scoring a 6-4 win in the second set after falling 6-2 in the first, but the senior's day ended with a 6-4 defeat to the 57th player in the nation, Francisco Cerundolo.

Last seasons, A-10 Freshman of the Year Axel Fries played No. 117 Thomas Mayronne and fell 6-4 in the first set, but regrouping for a 6-3 second-set win at No. 4. The sophomore then dropped a 6-1 decision in the last set.

In his first match as a ranked singles player, No. 120 Artem Khrapko saw his three-match win streak halted from the end of last season with a 6-2, 6-2 setback at No. 1 singles. He took on Gabriel Friedrich, who entered the season ranked 74th in the nation in singles.

The freshmen tandem of Yash Parikh and Douglas Macintosh saw their first collegiate action, with Parikh going to a super tie-breaker in singles at No. 6 before falling (1-6, 6-3, 5-10) and MacIntosh dropping a 6-2 decision in doubles with Matthew Rose.

Davidson continues on with its four-match homestand to start the year by hosting Gardner-Webb, Jan. 25, at 5 p.m.
