DAVIDSON, N.C. —
In a match that went all the way down to a tie-breaker in the final set at No. 5 singles, the Davidson men's tennis team fell just short, 4-3, Thursday inside the Knobloch Tennis Center against Gardner-Webb in a match that lasted over five hours.

Tied at 3-all, the deciding team point came down to No. 5 singles where freshman Yash Parikh battled Paul Hogan of Gardner-Webb into a third set tie-breaker. Parikh had taking the first set with easy, 6-2, but fell 6-4 in the next set to force the final set. That set went all the way to a tie-breaker, where Hogan pulled out a 7-3 win to secure the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-2) victory.

"Great effort from our guys tonight to step up, especially after an injury to one of our players during doubles play," said head coach Drew Barrett. "Disappointing to lose, but this will help us at the end of the season."

The doubles point came down to a tie-breaker as well at No. 2. Shamael Chaudhry and David Hager went the distance against Gardner-Webb's Breno Plentz and Maximillian Scholl, but fell 7-4 in the tie-breaker.

The duo of Axel Fries and Artem Khrapko scored a 6-4 win at No. 1, while GWU earned a 7-5 win at No. 3.

Fries carried over his doubles victory into singles play and scored a 7-6(3), 6-3 win at No. 3 for the sophomore's first win of the season after collecting 18 of them a year ago.

Thomas Mason moved to 2-0 on the year after pulling out a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles, while the third Wildcat (0-2) point came from Jack Riazzi at No. 6 as the senior secured a 6-4, 6-2 decision for his 16th career win.

One other singles match went to a third set for the 'Cats, but Hager out on the wrong end at No. 2. The senior won the middle set, 6-4, but dropped a pair of 6-3 decisions in the first and third sets.

At No. 1, Artem Khrapko, ranked 120th to start the year, battled back-and-forth in a tough two-set defeat, falling 7-5, 7-6.

Davidson plays the third of a four-match homestand to start the year Saturday when it takes on Presbyterian at 3 p.m.
