Wildcats Advance Past Saint Louis in A-10 Opening Round

ORLANDO, Fla. - Davidson men's tennis kicked off the Atlantic 10 Championship in winning fashion Wednesday, defeating Saint Louis 4-1 at the USTA National Campus.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 5-13 on the season and advanced to the second round against top-seeded VCU.
The Wildcats grabbed the early momentum by grinding out a hard-fought doubles point. While the Billikens took the No. 3 spot in a tiebreak, Davidson responded at the top of the lineup. Sebastian Carpio and Davide Procacci earned a 7-5 win at the No. 2 position, leaving the point to be decided at No. 1. Goyo Hidalgo and Kai Villagomez stood tall, edging out a 7-6(7) victory to give Davidson the 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Hidalgo kept his foot on the gas at the top flight. He surrendered just five games in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Declan Townsend to double the Wildcat lead. Saint Louis pulled back a point with a straight-set win at No. 2, but Davidson's depth ultimately took over.
Procacci put the 'Cats on the brink of victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3, and Connor Cole provided the finishing blow at No. 6. After battling through a marathon first-set tiebreak, Cole secured the match with a 7-6(7), 6-4 win to clinch the team victory.
Matches at No. 4 and No. 5 remained unfinished once the clinch was reached, with Carpio just one game away from a victory of his own at the No. 4 spot.

The Wildcats will return to the courts tomorrow to take on the tournament's top seed, VCU, in the second round. Match time is set for 9 a.m.
