DAVIDSON, N.C. —  Davidson shook off a tough first two quarters, but was unable to pull away from George Washington after overcoming a 18-point deficit in falling 53-48 Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 women's basketball inside John M. Belk Arena.

The Wildcats (7-12, 2-4 A-10) used a 21-5 third quarter outburst to tie the game up at 32-all and then went up 42-37 with a 10-5 run to start the fourth quarter. GW countered with an 11-0 run to go up six and held the 'Cats off in the final minute for the win.

Justine Lyon led the Wildcats with 13 points, getting 11 of them in that big third quarter. Sarah Donovan came off the bench for her third straight double figure scoring game with 10 points and had a season-high tying nine rebounds.

Katie Turner finished with nine points on three triples and set a season-best with seven rebounds, while Mackenzie Latt had eight points and six rebounds before fouling out.

For The Colonials (8-9, 3-2 A-10), Brianna Cummings scored 20 points. She had nine points in the fourth quarter and sealed up the win for GW by going 4-for-6 at the charity stripe in the final minute. Kelli Prange netted 10 points to go with eight rebounds off the bench.

Neither team shot well as Davidson finished at 33.3 percent after going 0-for-15 in the first quarter. GW was held to 31 percent shooting.

Davidson trailed 27-11 at halftime, but came out on fire in the third quarter by hitting 8-of-12 shots and erased its deficit.

The Wildcats carried that momentum into the start of the fourth quarter, running off the 10-5 spurt capped off by a Turner three-ball for a five-point lead at the 6:26 mark. GW came back to tie things up at 42-all on its own three-pointer and then took the lead for good after a Wildcat turnover with a pair of Cummings' free throws for a 44-42 lead with just over five minutes left.

Another Turner three-pointer with 2:39 brought Davidson within three at 48-45, but Cummings hit three more free throws for a 51-46 score. A layup by Donovan made it 51-48 with 26 ticks left, but GW sealed the win with two more free throws.

GW forced the 'Cats into 20 turnovers, the most since a 21-turnover game at UCF, Dec. 28, getting 13 steals and 19 points off those miscues. Davidson dominated the glass with a 46-38 advantage, its second-most rebounds this year.

Davidson takes to the road for a Saturday A-10 game at St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES: This was the fourth meeting all-time between both teams … GW holds a 4-0 lead … Justine Lyon has scored in double figures in 39 of her the last 42 games overall dating back to last season… it was her team-leading 18th double-digit scoring game tonight and the junior pushed her streak of scoring in double figures to a career-best 16 consecutive games … Lyon is closing in on 1,000 career points, needing 81 more to hit the mark ... with eight points, Mackenzie Latt moved into fifth all-time in scoring with 1,394 points, passing Janna Magette and moving within 13 points of moving into fourth where Hannah Early sits with 1,406 points ... the 40-rebounding effort was Davidson's seventh this year and third in the past four games … the Wildcats kept their double-digit assist streak alive at 10 by dishing out 11 dimes … the 'Cats saw their streak of at least three players score in double figures come to an end at eight straight.
