Wildcats Suffer Saturday Sweep to VCU

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson volleyball slipped to .500 on the season and 1-2 in conference play after suffering a sweep Saturday against league-leaders VCU (16-2, 3-0 A-10) by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-13.
The junior duo of Mason Rooney and Katharine Franz joined reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Ellie Crosley as they each collected five kills. Franz turned in a team-high .417 hitting efficiency. Junior Ciera Cockrell added three blocks, including two solos, and sophomore Elise Edman registered a team-best 17 digs.
The Rams, who top the nation in blocking, recorded 15 rejections on the day, and held the 'Cats, who lead the league in hitting percentage, to their lowest clip of the season.
Davidson trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening stanza, before battling back to take five straight before falling 25-17.
After falling behind early in the second set, the 'Cats clawed back to take the lead at 19-18. The lead was short lived, as the Rams quickly regained control and went on to take the frame 25-22.
VCU kept the momentum for what was ultimately the final set, taking 14 of the last 18 points to secure the victory.
Davidson remains at home next weekend, welcoming La Salle on Friday, Oct. 6, and wrapping up their homestand with Duquesne on Sunday, Oct. 8.
