DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In perhaps one of their most dramatic matches of the season, Davidson volleyball dropped a five-set heartbreaker Sunday to Rhode Island (23-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 15-17) in Belk Arena. The Wildcats slip to 8-7 (1-1 A-10) on the season, while Rhody improves to 6-8 (1-1 A-10).
Freshman Remi Lehnertz delivered one of the best performances of her young career, recording a match and career-high 13 kills. Senior Kelly Friers also added 13 in just two sets, and junior Katharine Franz matched her own career-high with 12. The blocking game was strong for Davidson, as freshman Ellie Crosley turned in eight (including three solos), with junior Ciera Cockrell totaling five (two solos) and senior Mary Harriet Moore assisted in four. Crosley also tallied eight kills, while Cockrell added seven.
Rhode Island carried control in the opening stanza until the 'Cats went on a 5-0 rally late in the frame to even the score at 23-23 before surrendering the final two points of a kill and attack error. The Rams looked to keep the momentum in Set 2, leading by as many as six, before Davidson recorded stole the set after taking the last five consecutive points off four different hitters.
The Wildcats, looking to maintain the advantage, went up early in Set 3, leading 9-2. Rhode Island responded by taking 10 straight points, going on a 15-2 rally. Set 4 was a back-and-forth affair, seeing four lead changes. At the 17-17 mark, the rookie duo of Lehnertz and Crosley took control, being responsible for six of the 'Cats final eight points in the frame.
The cat-and-mouse continued, as the Rams and Wildcats reached eight tied scores in the fifth and final set. After a kill by Lehnertz presented the 'Cats with match point, Rhode Island responded with a kill to tie it up once more. After a Rhode Island miscue gave the 'Cats a 15-14 lead and another chance at match point, the Rams took advantage of back-to-back ball handling errors from the 'Cats to steal the victory, 3-2.
The Wildcats remain at home, welcoming A-10 foe VCU for a Saturday evening showdown Sept. 30.
