AMHERST, Mass. – The Davidson women's track and field team heads to the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7 at the UMass Track & Field Complex on the campus of Massachusetts.
2016 A-10 Champs
Davidson claimed six top-10 finishes to finish 10th overall. The Wildcats concluded the meet with a win in the 4x800-meter relay to help secure the best team score in recent years. Hannah Rieden took second in a thrilling 800-meter run that set a then school record (2:10.07). Caroline Yarbrough went the distance and found herself on the podium twice for her second and third place efforts in the 10k and 5k, respectively. Sarah Paddon also notched a third place result in the 1500-meter. The 'Cats earned 13 more points from their inaugural A-10 Outdoor Championship in 2015.
Setting The Scene
The Wildcats have made a staple of resetting school records and personal best's throughout the 2017 outdoor campaign. Head coach Jen Straub's squad enters the championship with 12 student-athletes inside the top-10 on the A-10 performance list. Leading the way is a freshman thrower that burst on the scene in her first meet of the year, Carly Peters. The Eagleville, Pa., native snapped an 18-year-old record at the Charlotte 49er Classic, marking a toss of 45.91-meters (150'7). The rookie has the five best throws in program history and hit an NCAA East Region preliminary mark.
Going The Distance
Davidson will benefit from a deep core of veteran distance runners at A-10's. Senior Hannah Rieden reset her own program record in the 800-meter run in the tune-up meet, the Duke Invite, stopping the clock in 2:08.65. Rieden sits third in the league and finished second in this distance a year ago. Three Wildcats rank in the top-eight of the 5k – Caroline Yarbrough third (16:53.2), Sarah Sears fifth (16:57.66) and Laurel Sheffield eighth (37:14.14). Sears has also made strides in the 1500-meters, dropping her best time down to 4:28.50, while Yarbrough returns with a pair of podium finishes at the 2016 Champs. Coach Straub could also benefit from a pair of athletes in the 10k - Sheffield and senior Caroline Turner sit comfortably within scoring range in a grueling 25-lap affair.
Coaches Comments
"I am looking forward to the A-10 championships this weekend and am hopeful that we use the success and experience we attained throughout the season to garner some great results," said Straub. "It will be an exciting weekend as we are participating in some events that we didn't do indoors such as the javelin, 4x100 relay, and the 10,000-meters. The team is poised and ready to compete and I am excited to see how the weekend unfolds."
