Yarbrough Takes 5k Title as Women's T&F Shines at A-10 Champs

AMHERST, Mass. – The Davidson women's track and field team continued to improve in the Atlantic 10 Conference, earning 55 points and scoring in all but one event they participated in at the 2017 Outdoor Championship Sunday at the UMass Track & Field Complex on the campus of Massachusetts.
Wildcat sophomore Caroline Yarbrough earned her third A-10 title, first outdoor, running away with the 5,000-meters in 16:53.60. The Greensboro, N.C., native made her move with 1,200-meters to go and continued to create distance into the bell lap where she held on for the crown.
Junior Sarah Sears, in her second event of the day, placed fifth with a time of 17:09.10. Earlier in the day, Sears landed on the podium with a new personal best in the 1,500-meter, stopping the clock in 4:27.11, third overall.
Climbing onto the podium in her first outdoor championship was freshman triple jumper Jada Woods. Woods marked a jump of 11.94-meters (39'2.25) to place third overall.
For the second time in as many tries at A-10's, sophomore Tori Long reset her own school record in the 400-meter's with a time of 56.52. She now holds the three fastest performances all-time.
Long later joined up with freshmen teammates Katie Hines, Claire Nieusma and Jennifer Thompson to set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:51.01, good for sixth overall.
Senior Hannah Rieden placed seventh overall in the 800-meters with a time of 2:12.79. Freshman Makayla Binter jumped two spots Sunday to place seventh overall in the heptathlon, earning 4,226 points.
Davidson opened the day with the league's eighth best 4x100-meter relay result. The all rookie team of Hines, Thompson, Saidah Rahman and Jada Woods got the baton around the track in 48.40 seconds.
"I am so proud of how the girls represented Davidson over the weekend!" said Director of Track and Field Jen Straub. "We scored in every event we entered, but one, and the team improved its points total for the third consecutive year."
Freshman Carly Peters ranks 32nd in the NCAA Division I East Region and will look to compete at the East Championship at the University of Kentucky beginning on Thursday, May 25.
