DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a match that saw four of the six singles matches go to a third set, Davidson fell short in a 4-3 decision at home against Charlotte and saw its school-record home win streak come to an end Saturday morning in women's tennis at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats (13-5) had their 16-match home winning streak halted by its cross-county rival. Junior Ava Todd though kept her personal singles win streak alive, pushing it to nine in a row with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6. She is now 13-4 on the season.
The match started off in favor of Davidson as it captured the doubles point with wins of 7-5 and 6-3 at No. 2 and 3, respectively. The pair of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton won their 11th match, while Todd and Alexandra Abele won for the 14th time in 17 matches at No. 3.
Feaster gave the Wildcats their third team point when she pulled out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 match at No. 1 to run her record to 11-5 on the year, 9-4 at the top spot.
Three of the other singles matches also went the distance, but despite winning the first set in all of them, Megan Scholvinck, Gabrielle Centenari and Samantha Armas each dropped their matches. Scholvinck had a battle to the end in two of her sets, taking an 8-6 tie-breaker first-set win, but then falling 7-5 in another tie-breaker in the final set.
Centenari won her first set 6-3, but then lost 6-2, 6-3 in the next two sets, while Armas took a 6-2 decision in her first set only to drop 6-4, 6-3 decisions in the next two sets.
Davidson remains at home as part of a three-match homestand, next hosting Richmond, April 15.
