ORLANDO, Fla. — Freshman Axel Fries continued his outstanding season by winning his 10th consecutive match, but Davidson dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 48 UCF on the road Sunday afternoon in men's tennis.
The Wildcats saw their record fall to 9-4 on the season as they were facing the Knights (4-3) for just the second time.
Axel Fries, who was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season earlier this week, recorded his 10th straight win at No. 4 singles by taking a 10-8 super tie-breaker to determine his match. He won the first set 7-5, but came up short in the next one at 6-4, and with the team match already decided he played a super tie-breaker vs. Enrique Paya to finish out the match. The Stockholm, Sweden, native ran is record to a stellar 11-1 mark.
The freshman and J.B. Gough played to a 5-all tie in doubles, but UCF took the doubles point with wins of 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively.
Shamael Chaudhry battled to the end in his singles match vs. No. 93 Korey Lovett at No. 1, falling 6-4, 7-5.
Davidson wraps up its trip to Florida with a first-time match against Bethune Cookman, March 9, at 9 a.m.
