‘Cats Fall In Back and Forth Game at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. — In a game that featured 11 lead changes and nine ties, the final lead change proved to be the difference as George Mason pulled away from Davidson in a 59-55 Atlantic 10 women's basketball game Wednesday evening inside Eaglebank Arena.
With the Wildcats up 48-45 to start the fourth quarter, GMU tied and then eventually took the lead for good by using a 9-2 run to go up 54-50 with 5:21 left. Davidson would get within two, 54-52, on a jumper by Justine Lyon a few minutes later, but missed a chance to tie it on two missed free throws 16 seconds after Lyon's shot.
Then down 58-55, Davidson had one last chance to attempt a tying three-pointer with under 20 seconds remaining, but with the shot clock running down Chloe Johnson's shot was off the mark.
Lyon was the lone Wildcat (4-20, 2-10 A-10) to reach double digits with 14 points. Kyla Roland had a career game on the glass, hauling in 14 rebounds to go with eight points off the bench, while Saadia Timpton contributed five points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
George Mason (12-13, 5-7 A-10) also had just one reach the double-figure mark in points behind Kara Wright's 14. Jacy Bolton added nine points, while Tayler Dodson pulled in 10 rebounds.
A 14-5 run by Davidson in the third quarter had turned a 40-34 deficit into a 48-45 lead at the end of the quarter. Roland and Andrea Robinson scored a combined 10 points during the run.
Lyon sparked an early 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter with eight points and the 'Cats shot 8-of-16 overall for the quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams trade the lead, with five lead changes and six ties. Four straight free throws by Johnson gave Davidson a 24-23 lead halfway through the quarter. Then after Mason took the lead back, Ally Welling swished home a pair of free shots for a 34-30 Davidson lead with 1:36 remaining. The quarter would end with GMU taking back the lead at 35-34.
The 'Cats hit the 40-rebound mark with a game-high 43 and dished out 15 assists, but were held to 39 percent shooting. Mason finished the game shooting just 37.3 percent and only 5-for-20 from behind the arc.
Davidson returns home this weekend for a Senior Day and PlayforKay Game Saturday, Feb. 11, against Rhode Island.
