DAVIDSON, N.C. — Behind the senior trio of Rachel Piles, Melanie Ransom and Kayla Seymour, Davidson picked up a 74-64 Senior Day win over visiting Rhode Island Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action inside John M. Belk Arena.
Piles hauled in a team-high seven rebounds to go with a block and three steals. Ransom in her first career start scored eight points and dished out three assists, while Seymour hit a personal-best 4-of-9 shots for a season-high eight points and assisted on four other baskets.
Davidson pulled away with a 15-6 run that spanned the final 2:10 of the third quarter and went to the 6:17 mark in the fourth quarter. Capping the rally off was six straight points by Ransom to turn a 50-43 lead into a 65-49 advantage.
Rhode Island would get within seven on three straight triples to make it 67-60 later, but Andrea Robinson hit a fast-break layup and a free throw in the 'Cats next two possessions for a 10-point lead with under a minute to go.
Pacing the Wildcats (5-20, 3-10 A-10) was Justine Lyon with a game-high 26 points on 12-of-23 shooting. The sophomore took over in the second quarter by drilling home 8-of-10 shots and a free throw for 18 points. She scored eight of those points, including a buzzer-beater to finish the quarter, in the last 3:36 to break up a 30-all tie and give Davidson the lead for good at 40-35 heading into halftime.
Mackenzie Latt reached double digits for a team-leading 18th time, and the first time since Jan. 21, with 12 points. She added six rebounds, a season-high tying five assists and two steals.
Off the bench, Chloe Johnson tallied seven points and a career-high 10 assists, and Davidson as a team picked up a season-best 25 assists on its 30 made field goals.
The Rams (4-21, 0-13 A-10) put three players in double figures, led by Morgan Johnson's 14 points, with 12 of them coming on three-pointers. Ednaija Lassiter and Jalissa Ross followed with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Rhode Island as a team hit 11 three-pointers, which was half of its made field goals.
Both teams played to a 13-all tie after the first quarter, before Lyon and the Wildcats pulled away by winning the second quarter 27-22.
For the 12th time, and second straight game, the 'Cats hit the 40-rebound mark with 47 and hauled in 13 on offense. They tied a season-high with 20 fast-break points and finished the game shooting 44.8 percent.
Davidson plays its final home game with a 7 p.m. tilt against Fordham Tuesday, Feb. 14.
