DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson earned its third shutout of the season by winning all six singles spots and picking up the doubles point in a 7-0 home win vs. Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 women's tennis Sunday afternoon at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The 'Cats pushed their record 7-2 overall and won their second league match, while winning their first matchup ever against the Rams (4-7, 0-1 A-10).
With a pair of 6-0 wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, Davidson grabbed the early 1-0 lead. The pair of Ava Todd and Alexandra Abele ran their win streak to eight in a row to remain perfect on the season at No. 3. The top team of Megan Scholvinck and Samantha Armas ran their record to 5-1 on the season.
All six singles matches were won in straight sets by Davidson, as five of the players pushed their win streaks to at least two in a row. Leading the way was Abele, who won her fifth in a row at No. 4 singles after a strong 6-1, 6-0 decision. The freshman is a team-best 8-1 on the year with a 2-0 mark in league matches.
Scholvinck won her third straight and ran her record to 7-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2. Winning their second matches in a row were Anna Catharine Feaster (No. 1: 7-6, 6-2), Gabrielle Centenari (No. 3: 6-2, 6-3) and Armas (No. 6: 6-0, 6-2).
The six singles wins gave the Wildcats a 36-17 overall record and 9-2 in A-10 matches.
Davidson next travels to Deland, Fla, to take on UNC Wilmington and Stetson, March 5-6.
