Davidson Ends Regular Season With 54-47 Defeat on the Road

RICHMOND, Va. — The VCU Rams broke up a tied ballgame in the fourth quarter by finishing the last five minutes on a 13-6 run and Davidson closed out the regular season with a 54-47 setback on the road Tuesday evening inside the Siegel Center in Atlantic 10 women's basketball.
Tied at 41-all, VCU hit a pair of back-to-back jumpers to grab a 45-41 lead with 3:55 left. Justine Lyon would put in a layup at the 2:06 mark to make it a two-point game, but the Wildcats never got closer. VCU closed the game hitting 6-of-8 free throws to seal the win.
Lyon had brought the Wildcats back from a 39-32 hole to start the final quarter by scoring seven straight points in a 9-2 run to start the quarter. She finished with 11 points in the quarter.
The sophomore led all scorers on the night with 25 points, nailing 9-of-15 shots and adding a 6-for-8 showing at the charity stripe. It was the sophomore's fourth consecutive 20-point outing and ninth on the season.
Chloe Johnson scored eight points, while Rachel Piles and Kyla Roland tied for team high honors with six rebounds.
VCU put two players in double digits with Keira Robinson dropping in 13 points and Bria Gibson adding 12. The duo combined for 17 rebounds, as Gibson had nine of those, and the Rams won the battle on the glass, 43-30. It got 16 of those rebounds on offense.
Davidson did force VCU into 31.4 percent shooting on the night, including just 3-of-15 from behind the arc.
Up 26-20 and later 31-29 in the third quarter, Davidson saw the Rams run off a 10-1 run to close the quarter and grab a 39-32 lead heading into the last 10 minutes.
The Wildcats hit 4-of-5 shots to open the game, racing out to an 8-0 lead before closing the first quarter up 11-10.
The second quarter saw the lead change hands four times, with Davidson closing the half up 23-20 on back-to-back jumpers by Kayla Seymour and Johnson. The 'Cats defense held the Rams to 7-of-27 shooting through the first 20 minutes.
Davidson will next play in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on the road, Feb. 25 or 26, against a to be determined opponent.
GAME NOTES: This was the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs … VCU leads 4-1 in the series … Lyon's double-figure scoring night was her team-leading 20th of the year and marked the 15th time in 16 league games … she came into the game second in scoring at 19.1 in league games only … the sophomore has also paced the Wildcats in scoring nine consecutive games now.
