Davidson Concludes Season With 62-54 Setback at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. — Davidson saw Fordham erase its halftime lead by going on an 11-0 run to start the third quarter and the Wildcats were never able to recover in dropping a tough 62-54 game on the road in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament Sunday inside Rose Gym.
The Wildcats saw their season come to a close, while the Rams advance to the quarterfinals next weekend in Richmond, Va.
With the 'Cats up 31-29 after shooting a combined 54.2 percent in the first two quarters, Fordham caught fire to open the third quarter by hitting three shots from long range, two of them by Kate Kreslina, as part of the 11-0 run to go up 40-31 with 6:58 on the clock. The Rams would outscore Davidson 17-6 in the quarter for a 46-37 lead.
Twice Davidson (6-23) got within six in the final quarter on a Mackenzie Latt free throw (46-40, 7:03) and a few minutes later on an Andrea Robinson layup (48-42). But, Fordham sealed the win by going 8-for-10 at the charity stripe in the final minute and a half.
Three 'Cats reached the double-digit mark, led by Latt's 15 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists.
Justine Lyon, who came in averaging nearly 20 points against league foes, finished with 13 points and Chloe Johnson reached double figures for the ninth time with a 13-point outing and added four assists.
Fordham's G'mrice Davis had a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds, 10 on defense, and Kreslina and Danielle Burns each scored 11 points off the bench.
Davidson got off to a hot start, hitting four of its first seven shots for a 10-5 lead and finished the first quarter up 18-15.
The lead grew to seven on a Robinson free throw at the 6:31 mark. Fordham kept it close with a pair of back-to-back three-pointers later, but a Johnson triple with 1:30 to go gave the 'Cats a halftime lead of 31-29.
Davidson shot 43.1 percent for the game, while holding the Rams to 31 percent. It dished out 15 assists on 22 made field goals. The Rams scored 14 points off their 14 offensive rebounds and won the battle on the boards overall, 39-36.
The game marked the final contests for seniors Rachel Piles (five rebounds, two assists, a block), Kayla Seymour (4 points, five rebounds, three assists) and Melanie Ransom.
GAME NOTES: This was the seventh meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs … Fordham leads 5-2 in the series … Lyon's double-figure scoring game was her team-leading 21st of the year and Latt tallied her 19th and 64th of her career … Lyon finished the year pacing the Wildcats in scoring in nine of the final 10 games … the sophomore's 456 points on the year were ninth-most in a Wildcat single season.
