'Cats Host UNCA For Home Opener; Plays Princeton Saturday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a four-game road trip to start the year, the Davidson women's basketball team returns home for the first time Wednesday night when they play host to UNC Asheville for their home opener at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will also welcome Princeton after Thanksgiving to John M. Belk Arena Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.

The Wildcats (2-2) opened their 2017-18 season on the road against Western Carolina, N.C. State, Furman and Appalachian State, winning the first and last games of the trip.

Last Game Out at Appalachian State, Nov. 19...
Justine Lyon hit a driving layup on the baseline with 6.7 seconds and Davidson forced a turnover on Appalachian State's last possession to earn a hard-fought 59-57 road win last Sunday.
•ASU erased a 56-47 lead with 3:45 to go by going on a 10-1 run to tie the game up at 57-all.
•Lyon not only hit the game-winner, but stole the ball on App. State last possession to seal the win.
•The 'Cats had four double-digit scorers, led by Mackenzie Latt's and Sarah Donovan's 14 points.
•Lyon finished with 12 points, a season-high tying seven boards, two assists, a block and a season-best three steals

Home Openers & Home Sweet Home ...
•In the program's 38-year history, the Wildcats are 17-19 overall in home openers (two of the year's results are incomplete). They fell in last year's home opener to UCF, 57-38, Nov. 16.  
•Davidson is 7-4 the last 11 years in home openers.
•Entering the 2017-18 season, the Wildcats look to continue their strong play at home since the opening of Belk Arena in 1992-93. The Wildcats have gone 175-125 during that time span. •Davidson rattled off 13 straight seasons at home with a .500 or better record before the streak ended in 2014-15.
•The 'Cats had a school-record 12-1 season in 2011-12 at Belk Arena, making it the 11th straight season the Wildcats had a winning mark. It included a seven-game-win streak to start the home season.

Wildcat All-Time Record Watch ...
Mackenzie Latt became the 19th Wildcat to reach 1,000 points last year and currently sits in 11th with 1,176, needing 17 points to move into 10th.
•She already ranks in the top-15 in career scoring average (8th, 13.1), blocks (8th, 84), field goals made (8th, 510) and attempted (9th, 1,141), and rebounds (7th, 668).

Random Notes ...
Justine Lyon was named the A-10 Most Improved Player in 2016-17.
•Lyon twice reached 30 points last season, including a career-high 34 points at UMass, Feb. 4.
•Lyon had an 11-game double-digit scoring streak snapped at Furman after scoring eight points.
•Dating back to last season, the junior has scored in double digits in 24 of her last 27 games.
Mackenzie Latt, who had 13 boards at Furman, has 22 career double-digit rebounding games.
•Latt has 19 career double-doubles (six last year), with 11 of them coming as a freshman.
•Coach Gayle was the third head coach in program history to win their first game at Davidson.
Katie Turner's six triples at Furman were the most since Hannah Early had six vs. VCU (2/27/16).
•Davidson had a season-high 47 rebounds at Furman this year, matching last year's season best.
•Of those 47 boards, 22 were on the offensive end, the most since a 22-outing vs. Dayton (1/31/16).

All-Time Series vs. UNC Asheville & Princeton ...
•Davidson holds a 4-3 lead in the series, which dates back to 1984.
•The Wildcats has won 4 of the last 5 meetings, including the most recent, a 69-56 win (11/16/07).
•Former Wildcat Alex Thompson had a career-high 10 rebounds and dished off 8 assists in the win.

•The Tigers lead the series 2-0 against the Wildcats.
•Both teams have not met since Nov. 25, 2011 when Princeton earned a 53-44 home win against the 'Cats.
•The first game in the series was played at John M. Belk Arena the season before (12/29/10), with Davidson falling 67-61.

Scouting the Bulldogs ...
•UNC Asheville is off to an 0-3 start, falling at Western Carolina, N.C. State and at home against Charlotte.
•In a 51-47 setback to Charlotte, Khalia Webb led the Bulldogs with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Scouting the Tigers ...
•Princeton is off to a 2-1 start with victories against George Washington and Seton Hall.
•Its latest game was against Georgia Tech, a 67-56 setback last Sunday.
•Four Tigers scored in double figures in the defeat, led by Bella Alarie's double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds)
•She is averaging a double-double on the season, 15.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game.
•Tia Weledji (14.7 ppg) and Carlie Littlefield (12.3) are also averaging in double digits in points.
•Princeton went 16-14 a year ago and 9-5 in Ivy League play.
•It returns 10 letterwinners and welcomes four freshmen this year.
•The Tigers made the NCAA Tournament two years ago, their sixth appearance, falling to West Virginia in the first round.
