Palumbo's 5th Place Day Leads Wrestling at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Tony Palumbo placed fifth, going 5-1 in the 157-pound weight class to lead Davidson wrestling at the Wolfpack Open Sunday.
Palumbo won five straight decisions to open the day including a 10-3 winner over teammate Hunter Costa before falling to Benjamin Anderson of Duke in a tightly contested bout, 8-6. The veteran took down four members of the ACC, North Carolina State, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Clemson. Costa earned a pair of wins including a 10-3 decision over an unattached competitor, Dimitri Naimi.
At 141, senior Dustin Runzo won his opening bout, claiming an 8-2 decision over Carolina's unattached man, Gina Esposito, 8-2, before falling by way of major decision in the round of 16.
Junior Aidan Conroy dropped into wrestle backs and did not squander the second chance, winning three straight bouts, including a pair of pins in 2:57 and 1:33, respectively before falling in the 149-pound consolation quarterfinals.
Sophomore Noah Satterfield got off to a fast start at 174-pounds, outlasting his opponent from Newberry in the opener, 2-0, before dropping UNC Pembroke's Joe DiMartino, 10-5. Satterfield eventually fell in a major to UNC. Classmate Conor Fenn picked up hos second pin of the year over Queens' Jacob Balmas in 4:50, but was pinned himself in the quarterfinals by an unattached opponent.
The 184-pound consolation looked a lot like the Wildcat wrestling room during the week. Senior Ryan Devlin started it off by pinning teammate Joe Perino in 4:44. Devlin went on to face Fenn, with the younger 'Cat winning a 7-2 decision. Fenn ended his day in the consolation semifinals with a major loss.
Davidson opens their home slate Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Belk Arena against Limestone in a non-conference dual match.
