DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team competed at the Queens University's Fall Royal Rumble Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7, against College of Charleston, James Madison and host Queens.
The Fall invitational was rained out late Saturday afternoon and canceled for Sunday, but the Wildcats were still able to get in singles and doubles play over the two days with a strong showing in singles action. They took home six singles wins to go with two doubles victories.
In singles, the duo of Artem Khrapko and Matthew Rose won twice in different flights. The senior Khrapko sealed up a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Paul Mendoza of JMU at the No. 1 flight and added his second victory against Fernando Ramirez from CofC in the No. 3 flight, 6-3, 6-2.
Rose took part in the No. 6 and 7 flights, respectively, needing a super tie-breaker to determine his match against Theophile Lauthiez. He won the first set, 6-1, but dropped a 6-2 second-set decision before pulling out an 11-9 super tie-breaker. In a match vs. Jordan Owens of Queens at No. 7, the sophomore rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The pair teamed up together in doubles action at the No. 2 flight and scored a 6-3 triumph against a pair from CofC.
Also winning in singles play was Shamael Chaudhry (3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1) and Alexander Loope (6-3, 6-3 at No. 7 vs. JMU).
The other doubles win came from the freshmen duo of Camden Mazzoni and Yash Parikh. They played at the No. 3 doubles flight and brought home a 6-3 victory.
Davidson continues on with its Fall season by playing at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 13-15.
