Davidson Takes Part in the 49er Tennis Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team headed down Interstate 77 this past weekend to participate in the Charlotte 49er Tennis Invitational with 10 other schools, Oct. 27-29.
Ten Wildcats in all played in both singles and doubles over the weekend, facing players from UNC, Vanderbilt, host Charlotte, Winthrop, Richmond, Tennessee, Wofford and Gardner-Webb.
Artem Khrapko had a nice showing in the A1 singles bracket, picking up three wins on the weekend. He scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory Friday against Panu Virtanen of Vanderbilt before falling to No. 2 seed Simon Sondergaard, 6-1, 6-3. The senior regrouped on the consolation side and scored a three-set (4-6, 7-5, 6-0) win against his Richmond opponent, and later a 6-4, 6-2 win over another Vandy player.
David Hager won twice on the consolation side against two 49er opponents, netting a nice 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win in the first match and then cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 victory in his final match of the weekend.
In the A2 singles bracket was Axel Fries and Shamael Chaudhry. Fries faced the No. 4 seed in the bracket, falling 6-2, 6-1, but came back to net a 6-3, 6-1 win against his Vanderbilt opponent.
Chaudhry won a 7-6, 6-1 decision on the consolation side against Lucas Cerbelli from Wofford.
Freshman Yash Parikh earned the No. 3 seed in the B1 singles bracket, advancing in his first match with a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Peter Coombs of Wofford. He fell to a player from Gardner-Webb in the semifinals (6-1, 0-6, 6-0).
Fellow classmate Alexander Loope earned a 7-6, 6-2 win in the bracket against Noah Milliken from Charlotte.
Thomas Mason and Camden Mazzini took part in the B2 singles bracket. Mason won his first match with a three-setter, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 over Jack Burkill of UNCG, but lost to No. 1 seed Edu Villar in a three-setter despite winning the first set, 6-4, before falling 6-3, 6-3. Villar ended up winning the bracket. Mason came back later to win a 6-1, 6-1 consolation match.
Mazzini faced No. 4 seed Gabriel Dias of Winthrop in his first match of the weekend, but dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 decision. Later in the weekend on the consolation side he scored a 6-4, 6-1 win.
In doubles on the weekend, Douglas MacIntosh and Fries reached the final of the B2 bracket after earning a bye into the semifinals. The duo then won a 6-4 match against UNCG, but lost a 6-2 decision to Winthrop in the final match.
Hager and Chaudhry earned a third-place finish in the A2 bracket. They won their first match, 7-5, vs. Tennessee before falling 7-6 to a pair from Vandy. They came back for a 6-3 victory against a duo from Charlotte.
The pair of Khrapko and Matthew Rose competed in the A1 doubles and picked up a 6-1 win over a pair from Vandy on the consolation side.
In the B1 doubles bracket, Jack Riazzi and Parikh won a 6-2 match vs. Wofford to reach the consolation final, but fell to Richmond, 6-4, to end their weekend.
Davidson wraps up its Fall schedule with a trip to the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 3-6.
