LEESBURG, Va. – Paced by senior Sarah Sears second place result, the Davidson women's cross country team took third overall at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday at Oatlands Plantation.
The Wildcats registered 67 points as a team, good for third overall and up a spot from their fourth place finish at the 2016 A-10's. Dayton earned the women's title, tallying 42 points, while Richmond (61) was runner-up.
Davidson was in a great position in the early going as Sears led a pack of 'Cats at the front of the group chasing individual champ, Heather MacLean of Massachusetts. With around a mile to go, Sears found herself behind a trio of Dayton runners, but kept her cool and made a push to the line to take second overall in 17:50.6 over the windy 5k course.
"Today we stepped on the line prepared to do battle with top-two teams in the conference and we did just that," said director of cross country/track and field Jen Straub. "Sarah Sears, finishing second, continued to lead this team to a great finish!"
Yarbrough was next across the line in 10th, stopping the clock in 18:15.4, while senior Laurel Sheffield (18:18.2) and sophomore Maddie Hunter (18:19.7) joined their teammates as A-10 All-Conference members – finishing in 12th and 15th, respectively. Sophomore Susannah Cate battled back all season to be able to compete in the championship and rounded out the Wildcat scoring with a 28th place finish (18:47.6).
"To have four All-Conference runners in a championship event is wonderful … overall it was a great day for Davidson and our program," said Straub.
For Yarbrough, it marked her third All-Conference honor in as many tries, while Sheffield and Hunter picked up their first. Straub highlighted that Cate continues to improve and helped solidify the third place finish.
The third place result is the best for Davidson in the four-year A-10 era. The Wildcats cut 41 points from their 2016 fourth place finish (108). It is the best team result since the 2007 Southern Conference Championship runner-up squad.
Davidson, the 13th ranked team in the region, returns to action Friday, Nov. 10 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet in Charlottesville, Va., from Panorama Farms.
