CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Davidson women's cross country team capped an impressive 2017 campaign Friday, taking ninth place at the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championship at Panorama Farms, matching the best finish in program history.
The 'Cats registered 239 points, tying fellow Atlantic 10 foe Richmond who broke the tie-breaker to earn eighth. North Carolina State won the meet ahead of Furman and Eastern Kentucky in a field of 37 teams.
The ninth place result for the 'Cats matched the 2006 squad, but the 239 points earned Friday is 27 points lower than 11 years ago.
Leading the way for Davidson, once again, was senior Sarah Sears, who crossed the line in 29th overall. The Arlington, Va., native stopped the clock in 21:17.8, nearly 1:24 faster than her finish at Panorama in 2016.
"Our seniors really stepped up today, leading the team to our best collective race this fall," said director of cross country Jen Straub. "Sarah Sears continues to excel, but her actions as a captain have been exemplary."
One of the goals for the NCAA Regional was to improve the team's average time from 2016 and they did just that, averaging 21:44 for the 6k Friday, as opposed to 22:24 last year. The five Wildcat scorers all ran faster than the top runner on the team last year at regionals.
Sophomore Maddie Hunter, second on the squad, placed 43rd overall with a time of 21:39.5, just ahead of junior Caroline Yarbrough. Yarbrough came home in 45th place, stopping the clock in 21:40.9. Senior's Laurel Sheffield (21:50.6) and Sierra Ponthier (22:11.3) rounded out the scoring in their final cross country race as Wildcats. The final runners for Davidson were Susannah Cate and Sophia Mills, who both return next year with a tremendous amount of experience.
"This Wildcat team brings me pure joy! [All the girls] ran personal best's and supported each other throughout the race! It's been an incredible fall," said Straub.
