'Cats Nearly Stun Dayton, Fall 3-0 Friday

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson volleyball brought its grit Friday, battling with reigning league champions Dayton before succumbing to a 3-0 loss by scores of 27-25, 25-11, 26-24.
The Wildcats slip to 9-14 (2-8 A-10), while Dayton improves to 18-6 (9-0 A-10).
Junior Katharine Franz led the offense with nine kills on a .364 hitting percentage, while classmate Ciera Cockrell added six and sophomore Emma McLaughlin and freshman Ellie Crosley each added five slams.
The Wildcats came out blazing, nearly stunning the Flyers in the opening stanza, forcing three set points. After trailing by four points on two separate occasions, the 'Cats went on a 3-0 swing late in the frame to even the score at 24-24 and force extra points. Dayton pulled back ahead courtesy of a 'Cat miscue, but Crosley ripped a kill to even the frame once again before the Flyers pulled out the 27-25 mark.
After a bit of stalling in Set 2, where the 'Cats trailed by as many as 12 at one point before falling 25-11, Davidson fired back in the third game, battling through 14 tied scores.
Leading 13-9 in Game 3, the Flyers collected four unanswered points to equalize the frame. A back-and-forth contest ensued, the 'Cats holding the slight edge at 21-18. Dayton again used a small rally, evening the score once more. A Flyer error put Davidson up 23-22, before back-to-back Flyer kills put Dayton in control for ultimately the final time.
The Wildcats wrap up their home season Sunday, hosting Saint Louis in a 1:00 p.m. affair. Prior to the match, Davidson will honor its four seniors- Kylie Bishopp, Mary Harriet Moore, Sarah Fink, and Kelly Friers.
