DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In their final home match of the 2017 campaign, Davidson volleyball pulled off the ultimate upset, downing Saint Louis in a thrilling five-set victory (25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 19-25, 15-13) in Belk Arena Sunday. The win marks the first over the Billikens since 2014, the year Davidson joined the Atlantic 10.
Davidson improves to 10-14 (3-8 A-10), while SLU slips to 9-14 (6-4 A-10).
A trio of 11-kill performances paced the 'Cats, recorded by juniors Mason Rooney and Ciera Cockrell and freshman Ellie Crosley. The 11 slams were a career-best for Crosley, who hit at a match-high .611 efficiency and also turned in six blocks, including three solo rejections. Sophomore Elise Edman turned in a 20-dig day, aided by senior Kylie Bishopp, who recorded a career-high 13 digs in her final match in Belk Arena.
"This win was the manifestation of the focused effort our players have committed to all week," head coach Chris Willis said. "I'm proud that we we're able to send our seniors off with a great performance."
Davidson trailed by as many as six in the opening stanza before rallying to a 17-17 tie after back-to-back kills from Rooney. After the Billikens briefly regained the lead, Crosley ignited, registering three slams in the final seven points to hand Davidson the lead with a 25-23 frame.
The Wildcats kept the momentum as Set 2 began, taking the first four points and maintaining control throughout. With a 19-14 Davidson lead, SLU threatened, recording four straight to cut the deficit. A Crosley kill and Edman ace added cushion for the 'Cats, who were aided by some Saint Louis miscues to take the game 25-21 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
It looked like Davidson might stun SLU and pull off the sweep, as the 'Cats battled through 15 tied scores in Set 3, including a failed set-point at 24-24, but were unable to pull off the sweep, falling 26-24 in Set 3.
A 19-25 win for the Billikens forced a Game 5. The 'Cats held a five-point lead in the final frame at 13-9, before SLU once again found a way to keep it interesting, taking four straight points to even the score at 13-13.
Enter junior Katharine Franz, who had been a solid force at the net all day, recording six blocks. Franz executed back-to-back kills in dominating fashion, delivering the 'Cats the 3-2 match victory.
In her final home match in Belk Arena, veteran Mary Harriet Moore also delivered a strong performance, registering a .571 hitting percentage with five kills, five digs, and three blocks.
Davidson will head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Duquesne and La Salle for rematches on Friday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 5.
