THE SERIES
The Wildcats have had little luck against the Flyers, trailing in the series 1-12. The two first met back in 1989 and took a 14-year hiatus before reuniting in the PFL beginning in 2003. Despite the disparity of wins, the series has provided some memorable outcomes including Davidson's thrilling 37-36 win in 2006 and the five overtime battle on 2014.
#TRENDINGNOW
With his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, freshman running back Wesley Dugger returned to the top 10 in the FCS in rushing yards-per-game (105.8) and total rushing yards (635). Dugger's 160-yard performance at Stetson was his second best day in a Wildcat uniform, behind his debut 196-yard breakout against Brevard in the season opener.
LAST TIME OUT
Davidson squandered a fourth quarter lead, falling at Stetson late, 28-17. Rookie quarterback Tyler Phelps rushed for two scores, while classmate Wesley Dugger churned out 160 yards rushing, the third 100-plus yard game of his young career. Sophomore linebacker George Hatalowich made a career-high 12 tackles, 8.0 of those in the first, and a total of 2.5 for loss. Second-year defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Martin and veteran Brendan Simpkins each recorded a sack.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Davidson fell in a five overtime battle at Richardson Stadium back in 2014, 54-48. Wildcat quarterback J.P. Douglas completed 38-of-58 passes for 313 yards and four TD's, but a crucial interception gave the win to Dayton in the fifth overtime frame. Davidson's all-time best wide receiver, William Morris, caught three of those TD's as part of his 15 reception day, while Cam Cheuvront had the fourth. The Flyers balanced attack of Will Bardo (298 yards passing, 3 TD's) and Connor Kascor (47 rushes for 213 yards and four scores) powered the Flyers to victory. Three 'Cats registered double digit tackles led by Matt Casey's 12 stops.
CAN HE KICK IT? ... YES HE CAN!
Senior kicker Trevor Smith has connected on all 17 of his point after attempts this season. The Tampa, Fla., native ranks second all-time in PAT makes with 83, trailing only Daniel Hanks (109). Smith is 83-of-87 all-time.
HONORARY CAPTAIN
This week's honorary captain is Hall of Famer Boris "Bo" Henderson '01. Henderson was inducted into the Davidson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. A four-year letterman, he earned Football Gazette 1-AA Mid-Major All-American status in 1999 and 2000. A force on defense, he remains the Wildcats leader in tackles (338), sacks (28.5), tackles for loss (67.0), and unassisted tackles (197). A key member of the 2000 undefeated season, Henderson made a program-high 4.0 sacks against San Diego that October.
Senior Ryan Samuels stepped into the spotlight for this edition of the Football Player's Spotlight!
ANOTHER ONE
For the fourth consecutive year Davidson football earned an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee. Senior linebacker Ryan Samuel joins Matt Casey, Chris Woods and Nate Casey, in succession, as a Wildcat nominee for this presitgious distinction.
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE STAFF
Paul Nichols added four new coaches to the fold, two on each side of the ball. Hank Hughes (Springfield, '79) boasts an impressive resume having worked at the NCAA FBS level for 20 years. He most recently worked as defensive line coach for Nebraska in the Big 10 in 2015. With an extended stay at the University of Connecticut from 2001-13, Hughes helped lead the Huskies to five bowl games and the 2012 team to a ninth place rank in the country in total defense and seventh against the run. Jeff McDaniels (Davidson, '14) returns to his alma as cornerbacks coach. McDaniels comes back after spending two seasons with Texas State University working with offensive skill players and special teams.
On the offensive side, Laymarr Marshall (Duke, '98) will coach the running backs. Marshall spent the last 18 seasons at Mt. Tabor High School where he was head coach since 2008. While at Duke, Marshall earned Academic All-ACC honors in 1995 and was a three-year starter at running back. Tim Zetts (Akron, '09) will serve as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Zetts spent the last two seasons at John Carroll University where he was named interim head coach last season to go with his offensive coordinator duties.
