CARY, N.C. — Six Davidson men's tennis players competed over the weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held in Cary, N.C., Oct. 13-15.
Artem Khrapko advanced out of the first round by upsetting No. 4 seed Christian Seraphim from Wake Forest with a strong 7-6(4), 6-3 victory. His weekend ended though with a tough three-set defeat to Alexander Lykou of Presbyterian. The senior won the first set 6-1, but then dropped a 7-5 decision in the second set and lost 6-3 in the final set.
Joining Khrapko in the second round was Axel Fries, as the sophomore downed Chesco Cori of Coastal Carolina in a three-setter by the scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. He also saw his weekend end in the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to sixth-seeded Catalin Mateas of Duke.
Shamael Chaudhry fell in his first match of the championship, but later in the back singles draw came out with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Pat Hannity of Wake Forest.
Yash Parikh and David Hager each faced seeded opponents in their first singles matches. Parikh faced the No. 1 overall seed from Duke, Nico Alvarez, while Hager took on a No. 25 seed from N.C. State.
Davidson had three pairs of doubles teams, with all three falling in their first round matches. Chaudhry and David Hager nearly pulled out a win, but fell in a tie-breaker 11-9 after splitting the first two sets, 6-3 and 3-6.
The Wildcats next will head down the road to take part in the Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 27-30.
