DAVIDSON, N.C. —
The Davidson men's tennis team split its season-opening doubleheader to start the Spring by downing Winthrop, 4-1, before falling in the late afternoon match to Clemson, 6-1, inside Knobloch Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (1-1) won their first match of the season for the first time since 2009 when they downed Boston (7-0). The win against the Eagles evened the all-time series at 1-1.

"Our guys competed great today," said head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his 11th season. "We have a lot to work on, but we are in a good position to start the season."

Freshman Axel Fries had an excellent debut in leading Davidson to the win over Winthrop. He teamed with J.B. Gough at No. 1 doubles and blanked the Eagles' top team, 6-0, while the duo of Shamael Chaudhry and Jack Riazzi earned the doubles point with a 6-1 triumph at No. 2.

Fries then earned one of the three singles wins by earning a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 5.

David Hager won at No. 2 after his opponent retired with Hager up 3-1 in the third set. The junior split the first two sets, 3-6 and 6-3. Jordan Hart sealed up the win by scoring a three-set victory over Winthrop's Joshua Ryan. He came back from a set down (3-6), to score 6-3, 6-2 decisions in the next two sets.

Facing the Clemson Tigers for the fifth time since 2010, and third time in the past five years, Davidson was only able to earn one team point, though the Wildcats battled in each of the singles matches.

Hager finished the day 2-0 when he picked up his first three-set win of the season at No. 2 by taking home a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 decision over Daffra Sanon.

Fries took his opponent at No. 5 to a three-setter, winning the middle set 6-1, but falling 6-2 and 6-4 in the other two sets. Gough played a super tie-breaker after he split both his sets 3-6, 6-1 at No. 4, but fell 10-5 in the tie-breaker. Hart also battled in his singles match at No. 6 before falling in the second set on a tie-breaker, 7-3.

Clemson took the doubles point with decisions of 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 1 and 2, while the freshmen duo Matthew Rose and Kotaro Horiuchi in their debuts played a 5-all draw at No. 3.

Davidson will host Gardner-Webb, Jan. 25, for a 5 p.m. game.
