DAVIDSON, N.C. – Highlighted by an appearance in the 2016 Puerto Rico Tip-Off and contests against perennial powers Kansas and North Carolina, Davidson announced its 2016-17 non-conference men's basketball schedule Tuesday.
"What an exciting schedule for our players, our staff and our fans," said head coach Bob McKillop, who is entering his 28th season at the helm. "Our non-conference games match us up with legendary Top-10 programs like North Carolina and Kansas, as well as many NCAA Tournament caliber teams."
Following an exhibition contest against Belmont Abbey (Nov. 4), the Wildcats will open the 2016-17 season at John M. Belk Arena on Nov. 12 against in-state rival Appalachian State, which is coached by former Davidson associate head coach Jim Fox.
This year's meeting will mark the 75th all-time between the former league rivals.
Davidson will face Clemson in the opening round of the 2016 Puerto Rico Tip-Off Nov. 17. The winner of the Wildcats' opening round matchup will advance to face the victor of the game between Xavier and Missouri.
The 2016 field will also showcase Arizona State, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma and Tulane.
Davidson will be appearing in its second Puerto Rico Tip-Off after winning two of three games in the 2010 event. The Wildcats were defeated by West Virginia in the first-round (84-70) before posting wins over Nebraska (69-67) and Western Kentucky (64-51).
The Wildcats return home Nov. 26 to face cross-county rival Charlotte in the annual Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy.
A Nov. 29 contest at Mercer will begin a stretch of four-straight away from home. The road swing will include games against College of Charleston (Dec. 4), North Carolina (Dec. 7) and Kansas (Dec. 17 / Kansas City, Mo.).
After playing just two of its first nine contests on McKillop Court, Davidson will conclude the non-conference slate and 2016 with home games against Jacksonville and Hartford.
The entire conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
"The Atlantic 10 Conference projects to be stronger than ever. From start to finish the challenges will be extraordinary," said McKillop.
The Wildcats return four starters from last year's team that finished 20-13 overall, while advancing to their sixth-straight postseason appearance and 11th in the last 12 years.
Season tickets are on sale online here or can be purchased from the Davidson Ticket Office in person, or by calling 1-800-768-CATS.
