FAIRFAX, Va. — Despite getting two Nicole Pettiglio goals in the last 32 seconds, Davidson's comeback bid fell short as it lost 8-7 on the road to George Mason Sunday in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse at Mason Stadium.
The Patriots (8-3) scored three goals in the final 12 minutes to break up a 5-all tie and held on for their third league win in four games. The Wildcats fell to 2-2 in league action and 5-6 overall.
Annie Brockett had tied to score up at 5-5 with 26:52 on the clock when she converted on a free-position shot.
It stayed tied until George Mason responded with three consecutive goals off the sticks of Alexa McGovern, Jordan Sdanowich and Chachi Kelehan starting at 12:01 on the clock and ending at the 4:09 mark.
Davidson tried to charge back when Pettiglio would net her ninth goal with 32 seconds left off Christine Molinari's 16th assist of the year. She then earned a free-position shot with three ticks remaining and scored her 10th goal, but time ran out on the 'Cats.
The hat trick was Pettiglio's second of the year, while she added two groundballs along with one draw control and a caused turnover. Emma Sissman, Jean Atkinson and Paige Farrar each scored single goals along with Brockett. Joining Molinari in the assist column was Lucy Sexton with one.
The Patriots' Jacquelyn Spalding had a hat trick of her own, while Sdanowich followed with two goals. Lydia Montanino had a team-high two assists.
Spalding scored two of George Mason's three goals to start the game as it grabbed a 3-1 lead with 19:13 left in the half. Davidson countered with Sissman's team-leading 27th goal less than a minute later and Farrar eventually tied it up with her third score of the year at the eight-minute mark.
Atkinson capped off the 'Cats' 3-0 run with her fourth goal for a 4-3 lead at the break.
George Mason reclaimed the lead with two straight goals to open the new half before Brockett tied it up at 26:52.
Goalie Rose Woolson finished with nine saves on the day to give 23 for the weekend, while the Patriots' Elizabeth Benedetto had four.
Sarah Kopp and Rachel Hianik had two draw controls each as both teams tied at 8-apiece. George Mason had a 21-15 lead on shots and scooped up 15 groundballs to Davidson's eight. It also was 3-for-6 on free-position shots, while Davidson went 2-for-3.
The 'Cats return home for their final two home contests, April 15-17, against VCU and Richmond.
