DAVIDSON, N.C. —  In a down to the wire match, the Davidson men's tennis team secure their third straight Atlantic 10 win with a 4-3 decision over visiting Dayton Thursday on a windy afternoon at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Â
The Wildcats won their third straight overall, and fifth match in the past six, to improve to 8-7 and 3-1 in league play, while they sent the Flyers (12-5, 4-1 A-10) to their first A-10 defeat in five matches.
Â
The match came down to singles play and Davidson earned wins at four of the six positions to pick up the win.
Â
"Great win for the 'Cats today," said head coach Drew Barrett! "I'm really proud of our effort. We've been building over the last couple of weeks to play like we did today. The guys did a great job competing and focusing under the pressure."
Â
Dayton started out up 1-0 after a very close battle in doubles action. The Wildcat pair of Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough won their fifth in a row with a 6-2 decision at the top spot before the Flyers countered with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 to snap the four-match win streak of seniors Alex Howard and Evan Watkins.
Â
It all came down to the No. 3 position and the duo of Zack Zapatero and Artem Khrapko went all the way to a tie-breaker, but lost to give Dayton the first point.
Â
Davidson regrouped in singles to earn hard-fought victories at No. 2, 3, 5 and 6. Khrapko scored his seventh singles win of the year with a three-set battle. The sophomore played two tie-breakers in the first two sets, winning the first one before falling in the second one to force a third set. He then turned up his play to cruise to a 6-1 win.
Â
Hager kept his personal win streak alive by pushing it to five straight on the strength of a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3. He moved to a team-best 10-4 on the year. Junior Jordan Hart snapped a four-match skid of his own with a nice 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Â
Giving the 'Cats their final team point was Jack Riazzi at No. 6, and it was well deserved. The sophomore moved to 9-5 on the season and 4-0 in league play by coming back from a set down (6-3), to earn 6-4 and 7-5 wins in the next two sets for the victory. It was his first three-set win of the season.
Â
The Wildcats go on the road next to start April, playing at George Mason and James Madison on the 2nd and 3rd.
