PHILADEPHIA, Pa. —  Davidson won their first two Atlantic 10 men's tennis matches in impressive fashion, scoring wins over Duquesne and Saint Joseph's 4-0 and 5-1 Saturday during a doubleheader on the road.

The Wildcats moved to 2-1 in league play and evened their season record to 7-7.

"We had a great effort today," said head coach Drew Barrett. "I'm really proud of the way they handled everything. Due to the weather, we had to play both matches on the same day, but the guys never backed down, and showed great effort and energy in helping us to a couple of big A-10 wins."

In the first match vs. Duquesne (5-9, 2-3 A-10), Davidson started off playing singles and that's all it needed, scoring wins at No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 to seal up the match victory. Shamael Chaudhry picked up a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the top spot, followed by Artem Khrapko at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

J.B. Gough needed a third set at No. 4, but prevailed by giving up just one game in the final set to secure a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Jack Riazzi closed out the team win with a strong 6-2, 6-4 win at the last singles position.

The Wildcats would open its evening match vs. the Hawks (8-6, 4-2 A-10) by playing the three doubles positions first. They swept all three spots for the fourth time this year, netting a 6-3 victory at No. 1 by Gough and Chaudhry, who won their fourth in a row, a 6-1 decision at No. 2 by the senior tandem of Evan Watkins and Alex Howard, who also won their fourth straight, and a 6-4 triumph at No. 3 by Khrapko and Zack Zapatero.

Then in singles action, Chaudhry, Gough and Riazzi went unbeaten in singles on the day by scoring wins at No. 1, 4 and 6 again. The sophomore Chaudhry ran his record to 8-6 with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win, while Gough this time picked up a win in straight sets by netting a 6-3, 6-1 decision for his eighth overall victory on the year.

Matching them with his eighth overall win of the season was Riazzi with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph.

Giving the 'Cats their final team point was David Hager at No. 3. He would need an extra set after splitting the first two, 6-3, 4-6, but he came back strong to pick up a 6-2 decision. The sophomore moved his team best record to 9-4, while scoring his fourth straight win.

Davidson will play host to Dayton next week, March 24, at 3 p.m.
