DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Hannah Early scored a game-high 24 points in her final home game, but it was not enough as VCU spoiled Davidson's Senior Day with a second-half comeback in taking a 74-59 decision Saturday afternoon in John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats (11-18, 5-11 A-10), who split their season-series vs. the Rams, now await their seed for the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week, March 2-6.
Early tied her career-high with six triples, finishing 8-of-15 overall from the floor on her way to her third 20-point outing of the season. With her 24-point outing, Early moved into fourth place all-time in scoring with 1,400 points.
She did her best to try and carry the Wildcats to victory, scoring 14 of her points in the first two quarters when Davidson led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and then 35-28 heading into halftime. She had nine on three triples in the second quarter alone.
Then to open the third quarter, the sharp-shooting senior drilled her fifth and sixth treys on back-to-back attempts from deep behind the arc to give the 'Cats a 43-34 lead with 7:24 on the clock.
Davidson would get only six more points, though, with three coming on Dakota Dukes' and-one play, the rest of the quarter. VCU turned up the defensive intensity and responded with a 20-6 run in the quarter to come from nine down and grab the lead for good at 54-49.
The Rams outscored the 'Cats 26-14 in the quarter and went on to win the fourth quarter by the score of 20-10. They finished the two quarters shooting a combined 17-for-31 and closed the game at 45.8 percent overall.
Three VCU (21-8, 10-6 A-10) players reached double digits, led by Adaeze Alaeze's 17 points, followed by Isis Thorpe and Ashley Pegram with 13 and 14 points, respectively.
Senior Alexandra Long scored eight of her nine total points in the first quarter to help the 'Cats grab the early lead. Davidson shot 54.5 percent in the quarter, nailing four shots from behind the arc, two coming from Long.
Leading scorer Mackenzie Latt scored just seven points, snapping her 12-game streak of scoring in double figures. Dukes had seven points and two rebounds in her final home game, while Justine Lyon dished out a season-best five assists.
Davidson pulled in 29 rebounds to VCU's 37, and shot 42.9 percent from the floor. It also hit a season-high 9-of-21 shots from downtown and had 18 assists on its 21 made field goals.
