RICHMOND, Va. — Davidson saw it season come to an end in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament, falling 70-51 to Richmond Wednesday afternoon in the first game of the day in the Richmond Coliseum.
The Wildcats concluded the year with an 11-19 mark, while the Spiders improved to 13-17 and advance to play VCU in the second round Thursday.
Richmond's Micaela Parson scored a game-high 33 points, going 18-for-21 at the free throw line, and Janelle Hubbard added 14. The duo combined to score 20 of the Spiders' 36 first-half points as they grabbed a 36-20 lead at halftime.
Dakota Dukes, in her final collegiate game, recorded a team-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to pace Davidson. Mackenzie Latt followed with 13 points.
Senior Hannah Early tallied a game-high 10 rebounds, six points and four assists in her last game in a Wildcat uniform. Her six points gave her 1,406 for her career, fourth-most all-time in the 'Cats' record books.
Saadia Timpton and Diona Johnson scored six and eight points, respectively, off the bench to give the Wildcats an 18-2 advantage in bench points. The pair were a combined 5-for-5 from the floor.
After Richmond built its 16-point lead at halftime behind a 56.5 percent shooting clip in the first two quarters, Davidson started to mount a comeback, riding the hot hands of Dukes and Latt. Dukes opened the third quarter scoring four straight and another four straight a little later cutting the Spider lead to 45-30 with 4:46 left in the quarter.
Latt scored the final five points on an and-one play and a layup to help get Davidson within 12 points twice in the closing minutes at 49-37 and 51-39. She and Dukes scored 17 of the 19 total Wildcat points in the quarter.
A free throw by Justine Lyon two minutes into the final quarter made the score 51-40, but it was as close as the Wildcats got the rest of the way. Parson went on to score 14 of Richmond's 19 points in the quarter to seal up the win.
Davidson finished the game shooting 35.1 percent and pulled in 32 rebounds, a game-high 13 on the offensive end. It also dished out 10 assists for the 16 straight game with double-digit assists.
The Wildcats also scored a game-high 20 points in the paint and had 14 second-chance points.
