DAVIDSON, N.C. — Kianna Speight and Mackenzie Latt combined for 39 points and Davidson shot a season-best 48.3 percent from the floor on its way to an 82-72 win at home against High Point Wednesday night in women's basketball action inside John M. Belk Arena.
Speight led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, canning four of her personal-best seven field goals from three-land, while Latt followed with a season-high 19 points on a season-best 9-of-17 shooting. She also filled the stat-sheet with six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.
The duo dominated the first and fourth quarters, with Speight scoring 10 points in the opening quarter to help the Wildcats (1-8) grab a 22-13 lead. Latt finished it off with a 10-point final quarter as the 'Cats led by as many as 19 points (77-58) before holding off a late Panther rally.
High Point (1-7) put four players in double figures, led by Kat Harris' 15 points. Camryn Brown came off the bench for 14 points, followed by Haleigh Hatfield with 13 and Emma Bockrath added 12 to go with a game-high 13 rebounds to give her a double-double.
Chloe Johnson paced a 27-point effort by Davidson's bench with 14 points, hitting 4-of-5 shots and a season-best 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while dishing out six assists. Rachel Piles hauled in a team-best seven boards to go with three assists and two blocks.
Davidson used a 14-4 run near the end of the third quarter to break up a 42-all tie and go up by 10 points before heading into the final quarter up 58-52. Melanie Ransom hit one of three triples in the quarter and scored five points during the run.
The Wildcats then pulled away for good by going on a 15-3 run to start the fourth quarter and grab a 73-55 lead with 4:36 remaining. HPU came within seven twice in the closing minute, but Johnson and Justine Lyon sealed up the win with a pair of free throws each.
Davidson finished the game shooting a season-best 29-for-60 from the field, including a season-high 8-of-17 from behind the arc. It also had season highs of 20 assists, 20 fast-break points and 27 bench points, while keeping its double-digit offensive rebound streak alive at nine games with 10.
High Point got back in the game in the second quarter, outscoring the 'Cats 20-12, as Davidson held a 34-33 edge at the halfway point. The Panthers hit three shots from downtown and went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the quarter. It would finish the game 19-for-23 from the free-throw line and nailed seven triples.
Davidson takes some time off for exams before hosting Furman Sunday, Dec. 18, for a 2 p.m. game.
