DAVIDSON, N.C. — Mackenzie Latt and Kianna Speight each tied their career highs in points and Davidson tallied its second straight win with a 71-61 victory over Furman Saturday afternoon inside John M. Belk Arena.
Latt scored a season-high 25 points, while Speight matched her 20-point outing from last week's win over High Point with another 20 to help the Wildcats improve to 2-8. It was the first time since last Dec. 20, 2015 the 'Cats had a pair of 20-point scorers in the same game.
Davidson pulled away by using a 15-4 run over a four-minute stretch in the fourth quarter to turn a three-point advantage into a 66-52 lead with 1:39 remaining. Latt started the rally with a jumper and Speight ended it with her fifth triple of the game, as the duo scored a combined 12 of the 15 points in the run.
Latt finished the game canning a career-high 11 field goals on 17 attempts and added a team-best eight rebounds. Speight's five three-pointers were a career high and she set a new personal best with seven rebounds.
Justine Lyon gave Davidson three double-digit scorers with 12 points and matched Speight with seven boards, while blocking a career-high three shots. Rachel Piles came off the bench to pull in six rebounds and pocket a career-best four steals, while Chloe Johnson dished out a career-high nine assists.
Whiteny Bunn's 27 points paced Furman, which fell to 4-8 on the season. Cierra Carter had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Le'Jzae Davidson finished with 11 points.
It was a tale of two quarters for Davidson and Furman to start. The 'Cats opened up a 10-0 lead to start the game and led 24-9 at the end of the first quarter behind a 10-for-17 shooting performance.
But, Davidson went ice cold in the second quarter, hitting just one field goal, as Furman took the lead into halftime on a Bunn three-pointer at the buzzer for a 28-26 edge.
Furman held the lead throughout the third quarter, but only by as many as three points. The Wildcats finally took control when Melanie Ransom drained a three-ball in the corner to tie the score at 41-all with under a minute and Latt gave them the lead for good on a jumper with 27 seconds left in the quarter.
For the fourth consecutive game, Davidson reached the 40-rebound mark with a season-high tying 45 and kept its offensive double-digit streak alive with 12 boards to push the streak to 11 games. The Wildcats held Furman to 33.3 percent shooting, while shooting 41.3 percent themselves.
Davidson next heads down Interstate 77 to face cross-county rival Charlotte, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
