Longtime Wildcat Coach Will Help Guide College Basketball Strategic Principles
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson Men's Basketball Coach Bob McKillop is one of 10 people selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Competition Committee. McKillop joins another head coach, four Division I NCAA staff members, three members of the public with significant men's basketball experience and a student-athlete on the newly-formed body.
Per the NCAA, the committee, which will report directly to the Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee in an advisory role, will have regular communication with the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee and will review student-athlete health and safety, sportsmanship and integrity, game operations and presentation, technology, and statistical trends. The group will develop strategic principles in these areas, subject to the approval of the Men's Basketball Oversight Committee.
Now in his 28th season, McKillop is the sixth longest-tenured coach in the country. His 521 career victories rank him 24th on the NCAA's list of Division I winningest active coaches. Davidson has posted 20 wins in a season 14 times under McKillop, including 10 of the last 12 years. In addition, McKillop ranks sixth among active coaches on the NCAA's list of most seasons with their current school. Well respected throughout college basketball, McKillop was the 2008 NABC National Coach of the Year, and the 2008 Coach Clair Bee Award winner. A 10-Time Conference Coach of the Year, he was also a 2007 & 2008 Hugh Durham Award Finalist.
Other members of the committee include Judy Rose, the Director of Athletics at Charlotte, and Paul Brazeau the Senior Associate Commissioner for men's basketball operations for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Rose and Brazeau will be the liaisons to the Men's Basketball Oversight Committee. The first student-athlete to serve on the competition committee will be Nicholas Norton, a junior guard at the UAB. Ernie Kent of Washington State is the other head coach. The four administrators include committee chair Jim Delany, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference; Stu Jackson, Senior Associate Commissioner of the Big East Conference; Dan Leibovitz, associate commissioner of men's basketball for the Southeastern Conference; and Chris Reynolds, Director of Athletics at Bradley. The members of the public appointed to the committee are Jay Bilas, Clark Kellogg and Kiki Vandeweghe, who are all former student-athletes at Duke, Ohio State and UCLA, respectively.
