Davidson Finishes Fall Season at Kitty Harrison Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team wrapped up its 2016 Fall season by participating in the highly competitive 13th annual Kitty Harrison Invitational, Nov. 4-6, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of North Carolina.
The Wildcats mainly faced Texas Tech, East Carolina and Elon in singles action, while playing against doubles teams from Iowa, Maryland and Minnesota.
Freshman Alexandra Abele had the best showing in singles action, netting three wins. On Friday, she scored a nice 7-6(4), 6-3 win against ECU as she was one of three Wildcats to pick up wins against the Pirates. The first-year player also had wins against Texas Tech (7-5, 6-4) and Elon (6-4, 6-2) on the weekend.
Joining Abele with wins against ECU was Megan Scholvinck and Ava Todd. The sophomore Scholvinck earned an 11-9 third set tie-breaker win to picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 decision. Todd rolled in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Cassidy Shell netted a 6-3, 6-4 decision over her Iowa opponent for her lone singles win of the weekend.
Also earning a singles wins on the weekend was Ally Sexton, Samantha Armas and Gabrielle Centenari. Sexton took on an opponent from Minnesota and came away with a third-set super tie-breaker win, 10-4, to secure the match, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.
Armas scored a strong 6-1, 6-4 decision against her Maryland opponent, while Centenari was one of three 'Cats to get wins against Elon. The sophomore pulled out a super tie-breaker in the third set, 10-7, to earn the match victory (6-4, 5-7, 1-0). Davidson played three super tie-breakers in the third set against Elon, with Todd and Anna Catharine Feaster falling short in their tie-breakers, 10-5 and 10-3, respectively.
In doubles action starting Friday, the teams of Armas/Scholvinck and Centenari/Todd each came away with wins against Iowa. The pair of Armas and Scholvinck won a 7-4 tie-breaker to win the match 8-7, while Centenari and Todd cruised to an 8-2 victory.
Centenari and Todd added another win on the weekend, picking up an 8-6 decision against a duo from Maryland. Todd then teamed up with Sarah Stein to finish the weekend out against Minnesota and the pair had the lone Wildcat win, picking up an 8-6 decision.
Davidson will start its Spring season with three straight matches at home, beginning Jan. 22 against Wofford.
