‘Cats Close Out Fall Season at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team concluded their Fall season by playing their final event over the weekend of Nov. 11-13 at the Wake Forest Invitational inside Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Nine different Wildcats took part in the invite's singles and doubles draws, with several of the matches going down to a third set and all very tightly played. In all, there were 16 teams and 106 players combined from all the teams that played over the weekend.
Junior Shamael Chaudhry had the best run in singles, reaching the semifinals in the A1 Singles draw. He opened with a dramatic comeback victory against the No. 1 seed Dennis Uspensky of Wake Forest, taking a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 decision. Chaudhry followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the quarters vs. his Tennessee Tech opponent before his run ended with a 6-1, 6-3 setback to Bennett Crone of Indiana. He finished fourth overall after playing a three-setter against Zach Kennedy from Georgia State and falling 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
The duo J.B. Gough and David Hager competed in the A2 Singles draw with each earning a win on the consolation side. Gough scored a 6-1, 6-3 decision against a Navy opponent after he faced the No. 1 seed in the draw to start the weekend and fell 6-0, 6-3 and then dropped a tightly played 6-4, 7-6(6) to VCU's Vitor Lima.
Hager's win came in his final match, a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Navy.
Artem Khrapko picked up a couple wins in the B1 Singles draw on the consolation side. After falling in his first round match, he picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Radford's Colin Calais and then in his final match tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win against Troy's Jiaqi Duran.
In the B2 Singles draw, freshman Axel Fries won a consolation match, 6-3, 6-2, against Charlotte's Max Benolm.
Ricky Saad, Jack Riazzi and Jordan Hart played in the C1 and C2 Singles Draws. Riazzi won his first round match after his Charleston Southern opponent retired with the score being 4-1 in the third set to give Riazzi a 6-4, 3-6, 4-1 victory.
Hart played close matches all weekend. He fell in his first match, 7-6(2), 7-6(4), but came back with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Sam Taylor of Radford. He then played another three-setter, falling to Wofford's Parks Schoen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, before closing out with a 7-6(0), 6-1 triumph against his Navy opponent.
Rounding out the singles was freshman Kotaro Horiuchi, who played in the D2 Singles draw. He fell in his first match in a three-set 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision, but regrouped with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Andrew Hicks of Charlotte. He finished fifth overall after dropping another tough three-setter, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.
All four doubles teams won at least one match over the weekend. At the top spot in the A1 Doubles draw, Chaudhry and Gough upset the No. 2 seed from Troy with a 6-4 win.
Hager and Hart took home a 6-4 win over a pair from Tennessee Tech in the B1 Doubles draw, while Riazzi and Fries won a 6-2 match in the first round of the B2 Doubles draw.
The Wildcat duo of Khrapko and Horiuchi won a 6-2 match against a mixed doubles team from Charlotte and Wake Forest.
Davidson will open its Spring season with a doubleheader against Clemson and Winthrop, Jan. 21.
