DURHAM, N.C. – Danny Davis, Aidan Peterson and Jaylen Thompson each netted their first career goals to lead Davidson to a 3-1 victory at Duke in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Koskinen Stadium.
With the win, the Wildcats extend their unbeaten streak to three straight over the Blue Devils, while improving to 2-8-0 on the season. Duke, which has wins at NC State and UCLA this year, falls to 4-4-2 overall.
With 57 seconds remaining in the opening period, Davis, a native of nearby Chapel Hill, put Davidson in front 1-0 following a build up from Nathan Marder and Drew Krueger.
The Wildcats held a 5-3 advantage in shots at intermission before the Blue Devils finished with a 14-10 edge.
Shortly after Brian White provided Duke with an equalizer at the 55:04 mark, Jordan Hill just missed putting Davidson back in front when his header off a corner kick caromed off the right post.
In the 70th minute, senior Christian Fechter played a beautiful touch to Peterson, who calmly put away the eventual game-winner between the legs of Robert Moewes.
Clinging to a 2-1 advantage, Peterson set up Thompson's insurance goal and one v. one opportunity with a quick throw-in down the near sideline.
In addition to a tremendous showing from Davidson's defenders, Andrew Kenneson made a number of crucial stops for the Wildcats en route to leading both keepers with five saves.
The Wildcats defeated Duke 2-1 in Durham on Oct. 14, 2014, before the two teams played to a 2-2 (2ot) draw on 1992 Team Field a year ago.
Davidson demonstrated its depth again this evening playing 19 different individuals.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its regular season with seven straight conference tilts, beginning with a 3 p.m. kick-off against St. Bonaventure Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
