DAVIDSON, N.C. – St. Bonaventure scored three second-half goals, including two from Kieran Toland, to rally past Davidson, 3-2, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Bonnies improve to 2-8-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league play, while the 'Cats fall to 2-9-0 and 0-2-0.
Christian Fechter gave Davidson the early advantage in the 13th minute of action with his third goal of the season.
Jaylen Thompson, who picked up his first career strike in the Wildcats' win at Duke Tuesday, set up Fechter's goal when he beat a defender down the near side and played a perfect cross into the box.
Thompson and Maxi Pragnell (free kick) also had great scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to connect as St Bonnies' keeper made two terrific saves.
Toland, the Bonnies' leading scorer coming in, netted a pair of goals less than six minutes apart early in the second half, to put his club up for good. His second of the afternoon came via a penalty kick.
St. Bonaventure extended its lead to 3-1 midway through the final period with Isaiah Wilson's goal from about 20 yards out off an assist from Jon-Michael Perkins.
The Wildcats' final score of the contest came in the 76th minute off the foot of sophomore defender Jordan Hill, who put away a square pass from Maxi Pragnell.
Davidson held a 14-11 margin in shots, while the Bonnies finished with a 6-4 edge in corners.
Up Next
Davidson will travel to Philadelphia for a 7 p.m. contest against league-leading Saint Joseph's Wednesday night.
Coach Spear's Postgame Comments
"Congratulations to St. Bonaventure. You could see how much the win meant to them. Their three goals came in a 8-minute span – one was a deflection, then they drew and converted a PK, and the third was a great strike in to the upper 90.
We will need to look at the video to see where we could have been better in that vital stretch, but they certainly stepped up.
For much of the game, we had control but we lacked the cutting edge to see the game through.
Jaylen was dangerous on the flank and his dribbling then pass to Christian for the tap in was a great start. But we could not get that crucial second goal, which would have propelled us forward.
We pushed late, and it was nice for Jordan to score because he works so hard on the defending side.
It's disappointing to not convert the big mid-week win at Duke with more momentum. It underlines the parity of college soccer and that we must keep improving."
