CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Playing in their third Fall event of the season, the Davidson men's tennis team traveled just a few miles down the road to compete in the Charlotte 49er Fall Invitational over the weekend of Oct. 28-30.
Eight different Wildcats competed in both the singles and doubles draws against a number of teams.
In singles action, Matthew Rose won the consolation side of the C1 singles bracket. After falling in his first match, the freshman scored an easy 6-1, 6-1 win against a Bluefield opponent. Rose then scored a 6-3, 7-5 victory against his UNCG opponent, setting up a match against Shaaz Perrani of Troy, whom he gave up just three games to in a strong 6-1, 6-2 decision.
The trio of Jordan Hart (B1 singles), J.B. Gough (B2 singles) and Jack Riazzi (B2 singles) each won two singles matches over the weekend. Hart opened up with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Wofford, but then fell in the next round, 6-3, 6-3, to Troy's Pablo Moreno. The senior took on fellow teammate Tommy Mason in his first consolation match, downing him 6-3, 6-1. Hart's weekend ended with a 6-1, 6-2 setback in his final match.
Mason won a three-setter to start his singles run, scoring a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against Charlotte's Josh Aubrey. But he took on fourth-seeded Scotty Cameron of South Carolina in the second round and fell 6-4, 6-0.
Gough won his first match of the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Warren Bryan of UNCG, but dropped a tough three-set match, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round to his Georgia State opponent. He regrouped to close out the weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The junior Riazzi begin his weekend with a comeback, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, win against host Charlotte, but fell short in his second round match, 6-4, 6-0, in the B2 singles draw to Troy's Trey Morris. He finished out with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6(5) victory against Winthrop on the consolation side.
In the A2 singles bracket, David Hager earned one win, a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Andy Lau of Troy.
Competing in the A1 singles draw was Ricky Saad and Shamael Chaudhry.
In doubles action, the duo of Hart and Rose had the best showing by winning the C1 doubles bracket. They downed a pair from Appalachian State in a tie-breaker, 7-3, to move to the final match and scored a 7-5 triumph against Troy.
Riazzi and Mason won their first match against host Charlotte, 6-4, but lost in the next round (6-3) to finish fourth overall in the B1 doubles bracket.
Rounding out the doubles teams was Chaudhry and Gough, who won a consolation match 6-1 before falling in the consolation final to a duo from Duke, 6-2.
Davidson closes out its Fall season with a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take part in the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 11-13.
