Season Rewind
Davidson has competed in four events as a team this season. Paced by sophomore Caroline Yarbrough's third place finish, the Wildcats grabbed the team win at the Royal Cross Country Challenge. Yarbrough traversed the 5k course in 17:41.2. Junior Sarah Sears crossed the line in 10th just ahead of freshman Maddie Hunter (17:55.8). Junior Laurel Sheffield (18:03.0) and Sierra Ponthier (18:05.9) each set new personal best times in their final prep for the A-10 Champs.
Davidson opened the season with a second place result at the Charlotte Preview Meet. Sears led the way, placing fourth overall in 18:27.9. Hunter (18:28.6) and fellow freshman Susannah Cate (18:29.4) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Yarbrough ran alone at the VertCross Invitational and narrowly missed her personal best at the 6k distance, traversing the course in Kernersville, N.C. in 22:00.5. She ran her fastest 6k at the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet last November (21:56.6).
Preseason Coaches' Poll
The Wildcats were tabbed to finish seventh in the 2016 Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Aug. 30. Defending champs, Richmond, were atop the poll, while Duquesne and Massachusetts rounded out the top-three spots.
Scouting the Field
Three Atlantic 10 members are currently ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional Poll released Oct. 17. Duquesne and George Washington came in 10th and 12th, respectively, in the Mid-Atlantic region, while Dayton ranked 13th in the Great Lakes.
Fast Start
Freshman Maddie Hunter has earned two Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors in just three races this season. Hunter first received this distinction after the first race of the season at the Charlotte Preview Meet. The Charlottesville,Va., native grabbed it again following her 11th place finish at the Royal Cross Country Challenge on the same course. She was able to cut over 33 seconds off her collegiate debut at McAlpine Park five weeks before.
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, Caroline Yarbrough, earned the conference's Athlete of the Week recognition following her third place finish.
2015 A-10 Championship Recap
Yarbrough crossed the line third overall in 17:20.9 and earned the league's Rookie of the Year honors, helping her team place eighth overall at the 2015 champs at Pole Green Park. Allison Cheeseman was next in 28th (18:07.4), while Hayden Bates was 43rd in 18:29.1.
Coach Straub on A-10 Championship
