CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Sophomore Megan Scholvinck led a group of Wildcats at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship, hosted by North Carolina over the weekend, with an impressive run in singles by reaching the quarterfinals on the consolation side.
Playing in the qualifying singles draw to open the weekend, the sophomore pulled out a three-setter against Caitlin Cridland of Winthrop to start her impressive run. She came back from dropping the first set, 6-2, to score 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the next two sets to move on and face Clemson's Ally Miller Krasilnikov. Scholvinck won a first-set tie-breaker, 7-4, before sealing up a spot in the main singles draw with a 6-4 second-set victory.
Her first round match in the main draw was a battle with Amanda Rebol of N.C. State, which Rebol held off the sophomore in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 decision. But, Scholvinck got back to her winning ways and won a pair of thrilling super tie-breakers in the third set to win both her matches against opponents from Presbyterian (6-3, 5-7, 10-7) and Wake Forest (7-5, 4-6, 10-8), and advance to the quarterfinals on the consolation side.
Scholvinck's weekend ended though, with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Adriana Reami of N.C. State, who went on to reach the finals.
The Wildcats also saw Anna Catharine Feaster, Alexa Abele, Gabrielle Centenari and Ava Todd compete in singles and doubles. Feaster earned a spot into the main draw on Friday, but fell in her first round match against Liza Fieldsend of College of Charleston, 6-2, 7-5. The junior came back to earn a well-played 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 victory against Wake Forest's Joanna Zalweski on the consolation side. It would be as far as Feaster could get, as the junior dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to Celia Ruiz of East Carolina to end her run at the regional championship.
Abele, Todd and Centenari both played with Scholvinck in the qualifying round Thursday. The freshman Abele won her first match against Tracy Johnson of Presbyterian, 6-1, 6-2, but came up short in a 7-6(3), 6-1 defeat to Tavia Stenta of the Wolfpack to miss out on making the main draw.
Todd fell in her first match in a hard-fought three-set match against her Charlotte opponent, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Centenari won a big three-set victory in her first match Thursday against Elon's Kirsten Ward (6-2, 6-7, 6-3). It would be short-lived as the sophomore dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to her opponent from UNC Wilmington in the next round of the qualify draw to end her singles weekend.
All three of the Wildcats' doubles teams won first round matches before falling in the next round to seeded teams. Centenari and Feaster nailed down an 8-3 decision over a team from Gardner-Webb, but lost 8-4 to the 9th seed from Duke in the second round.
Samatha Armas and Scholvinck scored an 8-3 victory against USC-Upstate before falling to a team from Wake Forest, which was seeded 8th. The final team of Abele and Todd won 8-4 against a pair from Appalachian State, but another team from Wake Forest also defeated them, which was seeded 12th in the championship.
Davidson has one more Fall event, Nov. 4-6, with a trip to the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by UNC.
