PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In addition to Jack Gibbs (first team) and Peyton Aldridge (third team) earning preseason all-conference recognition, Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 men's basketball standings, as announced at the league's annual Media Day Tuesday inside PPG Paints Arena.
Davidson head coach Bob McKillop spent the morning meeting with both print and electric media before concluding the event with a luncheon.
A senior from Westerville, Ohio, Gibbs led the league in scoring a year ago averaging 23.5 points per game, which also ranked sixth nationally. The senior scored 40 points in a game three times, 35 or more seven times and hit the 30-point mark 10 times.
Named A-10 Player of the Week a league-best five times last season, Gibbs also ranked among league leaders in assists, steals, 3-point field goals per game and free-throw percentage.
Along with all-conference and district honors, Gibbs was named to the Naismith Trophy 50-man early-season watch list a year ago, while twice earning National Player of the Week honors – USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week (1/19/16); Lute Olson Player of the Week (1/12/16).
The 6-0 point guard was recently selected one of 20 candidates for the Bob Cousy award, given annually to college basketball's top point guard.
Aldridge, an all-rookie selection in 2015, started all 33 games for the Wildcats in 2015-16, while averaging 15.5 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game. The Leavittsburg, Ohio native also led Davidson in free-throw percentage (.847) and blocks per game (1.0).
Selected a team captain for the second straight season, Aldridge scored in double figures 26 times last year, hit the 30-point plateau once and scored at least 20 points in a contest seven times, including five against league competition.
Dayton was tabbed preseason favorites, receiving 16 of a possible 28 first-place votes. The Flyers (374 points) edged out Rhode Island (370), which garnered the other 12 first-place votes. VCU is predicted to finish third ahead of the Wildcats, who have won 24 league contests since joining the A-10 in 2014.
St. Bonaventure, one of three teams to share last season's regular season crown, was picked fifth followed by Richmond, La Salle and George Washington. Last year's tournament champion, Saint Joseph's, is ninth in the preseason poll in front of Massachusetts, Fordham, George Mason, Duquesne and Saint Louis.
The Wildcats return four starters from last year's team that finished 20-13 overall, while advancing to their sixth-straight postseason appearance and 11th in the last 12 years.
