AMHERST, Mass. – Davidson field hockey (3-12, 1-5 A-10) dropped a heartbreaker Friday afternoon, falling in the final eight seconds of regulation, 3-2, to league opponent Massachusetts (8-6, 4-1 A-10) in Amherst.
The Wildcats had goals courtesy of seniors Becca Jones and Katherine English. English led the shooting effort, with two shots on-goal, and assists coming from senior Lauren McFayden (to Jones), and the duo of junior Hannah Fisher and Courtney Byler (to English).
The 'Cats took an early lead, scoring just two minutes into play. Jones was in transition and one-on-one with the Minutewomen's goalie and fired a shot to the back of the cage.
UMass scored the equalizer less than a minute later, and then took the lead on another goal from the center of the circle, both scored by team-leader Sarah Hawkshaw.
Determined, Davidson delivered a perfectly executed corner, as Fisher sent it in to Byler, who supplied the stick setup for English, who tied the game up once more.
It looked like a game of back-and-forth, as UMass fired a would-be goal off from right at the edge of the boundary line, but it was called back and the score remained knotted up at 2-2 for the duration of the period.
The second half picked up right where the first frame left off, as both teams continued to battle possession and play a contest of cat-and-mouse. It appeared like Davidson would regain the lead, off a brilliant shot from McFayden that had everyone holding their breath, but it barely missed the cage and went wide.
The Minutewomen connected on the game winner with just eight seconds remaining in regulation to steal the victory from the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to action for a non-conference clash Sunday, facing off against Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., at 11:00 a.m.
