KINGSTON, R.I. — Despite getting a combined 37 points from Hannah Early and Mackenzie Latt, Davidson could not overcome a hot Rhode Island start and 13 three-pointers as it fell on the road 78-62 during a snowy Saturday afternoon in the Ryan Center for Atlantic 10 women's basketball.
Davidson had its two-game overall win streak snapped, falling to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in league play. It also saw its two-game road win streak halted.
The Rams, who entered the game shooting just 29.4 percent from behind the arc, hit nine of their 14 first-half field goals from there and went on to finish with 13 triples for the game. In addition, they opened the game with an 18-7 lead and the Wildcats had to play catch up the rest of the game.
Early dropped in 19 points to lead Davidson, draining a season-high tying five shots from downtown. She also had three blocks. Latt finished with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting and had five rebounds to go with three steals and three assists.
Giving the 'Cats three double-digit scorers was Dakota Dukes, who recorded her fifth double-double of the season on 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
URI's Charise Wilson finished with a game-high 25 points, getting 13 in the first half. She hit four of her nine field goals from three-land.
Samantha Tabakman scored 13 points and had seven rebounds, while Dominique Ward added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Davidson tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter. Down 47-29 after another Rams' three with 7:33 on the clock, the 'Cats, behind Early and Latt, rattled off a 17-5 run to close within six at 52-46 and 1:56 remaining in the quarter. The duo combined to score 15 of the 17 points, with Latt capping it off on her second and-one conversion.
The Rams (9-9, 3-3 A-10) answered with yet another three-pointer and pushed their lead back to double-digits to end the quarter, 57-46.
A Latt bucket to start the final quarter made it 57-48, but it was as close as Davidson got to rest of the way.
The first quarter saw the 'Cats try to weather through the Ram's hot start led by Wilson. She scored 13 of their first 18 points and Davidson would the end quarter trailing by 10 (23-13).
Early drilled a pair of triples on back-to-back possessions late in the second quarter to get the 'Cats within 31-23 and 3:38 left. But, Rhode Island continued its hot outside shooting, canning another two three-pointers and went into the break up 39-27.
Davidson comes back home to take on George Washington next Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m.
