DAVIDSON, N.C. — The trio of Dakota Dukes, Mackenzie Latt and Hannah Early scored in double figures in the same game for the eighth time this year, but George Washington used a big second quarter run to pull away for a 79-60 win on Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 women's basketball at John M. Belk Arena.
With the win, GW (18-3, 8-0 A-10) kept its win streak in tack by pushing it to 13 straight and remained perfect in league play. Davidson fell to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
The 'Cats' great start to the game came to a halt in the second quarter as they saw their five-point lead vanish over the last 7:37 of the quarter when the Colonials went on a 21-0 run to grab a 42-26 advantage at halftime. Davidson was outscored 26-9 in the quarter.
GW put five players in double digits, led by Shannon Cranshaw's 15 points. Hannah Schaible, Caira Washington and Brianna Cummings each scored 12 points, while Mei-Lyn Bautista add 11. She (3) and Cranshaw (5) combined to hit eight of GW's nine three-pointers.
Dukes paced Davidson for the 11th time in scoring with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 6-for-7 at the free-throw line. Latt followed with 15 points, six rebounds and a season-high tying four steals. Davidson finished with a season-best 14 as a team.
Rounding out the trio of double-digit scorers was Early with 10 points as she moved into sixth place all-time with over 1,300 points.
The senior Dukes sparked the Wildcats' offense in the first quarter with eight points, including six straight on a pair of and-one conversions that made it 15-12 late in the quarter. Davidson closed the quarter up 17-16.
The Wildcats continued their great start, catching fire from downtown to open the second quarter. They hit three triples in a row, two by Kianna Speight, to open up leads of 20-16, 23-18 and 26-21.
The 26-21 lead would be the last one for the 'Cats though, as George Washington forced them into six turnovers and held them scoreless the rest of the quarter. The Colonials' 21-0 run to finish out the quarter saw six different players contribute.
Twice in the third quarter at 5:44 (48-35) and 3:42 (51-38) Davidson cut the GW lead to 13 points after Dukes and Saadia Timpton swished home free throws. GW answered each time and eventually pushed its lead to 22 at the end of the quarter, 63-41, and to as much as 24 in the fourth quarter.
Davidson hit 41.8 percent of its shots, while George Washington finished at 53.7 percent on 29-of-54 shooting. It also held a 34-28 edge on the glass. The 'Cats did force the Colonials into 23 turnovers, getting 21 points on those miscues.
For the third time in the past five games, Davidson goes back on the road for a game at Dayton this Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was just the second-ever meeting all-time between the two schools … Latt's double-figure scoring game was her team-leading 17th of the season … Early had two more triples, moving her within 13 of passing Laura Murray's all-time record of 222 … Davidson fell to 5-3 when the trio of Dukes, Latt and Early score in double figures in the same game … the Wildcats had their seventh game in a row of 10 or more assists … in last year's meeting, GW entered the game riding a 17-game win streak.
