DAYTON, Ohio — In a game that featured four ties and 10 lead changes, Davidson saw Dayton pull away in the third quarter and hold on for a 77-66 victory at home Sunday afternoon at UD Arena in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action.
The Wildcats, which led for nearly 19 minutes of the game, grabbed its biggest lead at 46-39 on a Hannah Early jumper with 7:26 left in the third quarter when Dayton used a 17-5 run to end the quarter and take a 56-51 lead. It would not give it back the rest of the way.
Early paced the 'Cats (9-13, 3-6 A-10) with 16 points, draining three of their eight three-pointers on the afternoon. The pair of Dakota Dukes and Mackenzie Latt each recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was Dukes' sixth double-double, while Latt picked up her first of the season. Latt also added a season-high four assists and a career-best four blocks.
Justine Lyon came off the bench for nine points, including a big buzzer-beating three right before halftime to give Davidson a 40-37 lead. Kyla Roland had a solid game off the bench as well with a season bests of eight rebounds and four points.
The Flyers (11-9, 4-5 A-10) put four in double figures. Christy Macioce led the way by scoring a game-high 17 points. She hit five of her six field goals from behind the arc.
Saicha Grant-Allen scored 14 points and had nine rebounds, JaVonna Layfield added 11 off the bench and Jenna Burdette netted 10 points, including 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Dayton went 20-for-25 at the charity stripe as a team, hitting 14 in the third and fourth quarters combined. Davidson finished a season-low 4-of-16 at the charity stripe.
Both teams played to an even 20-all tie in the first quarter. Alexandra Long and Early each canned a couple of triples to give Davidson early leads of 10-8 and 18-13.
The second quarter ended with excitement for the Wildcat fans when Lyon swished home a deep three-ball off an out of bounds play and just 1.5 seconds left to break up a 37-all tie. The 'Cats could have pushed the lead out more prior to that triple, but Latt missed two free throws after Dayton's bench was called for a technical foul.
The new half started off with a mini 6-2 run for the Wildcats to open up its biggest lead at seven points. Dayton started its comeback hitting four of its next six shots and closed the half on its big run to hold a five-point edge heading to the fourth quarter.
The Flyer lead grew to 12 four different times in the fourth, with Davidson getting as close as nine just once on a jumper by Latt with 1:18 left in the game.
Davidson had its 11th game of 40-plus rebounds, crashing the boards for a game-high 48. It also hauled in a season-best 22 offensive rebounds and recorded a season-high 24 second-chance points.
Davidson returns home for its next two games, starting next Wednesday, Feb. 3, with a 7 p.m. A-10 game against George Mason.
