‘Cats Fall in Atlantic 10 Opener at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. — The Davidson women's basketball team came up short in their Atlantic 10 conference opener, falling 51-40 on the road to Fordham Saturday afternoon in Rose Hill Gym.
Davidson fell to 6-8 overall (0-1 A-10) and 12-11 all-time in conference openers, while Fordham moved its overall record to 6-8.
Mackenzie Latt, Dakota Dukes and Diona Johnson each scored 12 points to pace the Wildcats on offense. Despite being held to two points, senior Hannah Early pulled in 12 rebounds with 11 of them on defense.
Fordham's G'mrice Davis led all scorers with 21 points, while Samantha Clark registered a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Davis scored 12 of her 21 points in the first two quarters as Fordham built a 10-point halftime lead.
Down by 18 at the end of the third quarter, Davidson tried to mount a comeback behind Latt and Johnson. The duo sparked a 13-5 run in the final quarter by combining to score all 13 points and get the 'Cats within 48-38 with 2:30 remaining. Fordham though hit a three-pointer on its next possession and Davidson scored just two more points in the final two minutes.
Davidson opened the game with leads of 6-2 and 8-6, but Fordham used a 19-3 run that spanned from the end of the first quarter into the start of the second quarter for a 21-9 lead.
Back-to-back triples by Johnson later got the 'Cats back on the board before they headed into the break down 25-15. Davidson forced 12 turnovers in the first two quarters, but were unable to capitalize, scoring zero points.
Fordham outscored the Wildcats 18-10 in the third quarter, grabbing its biggest lead of the game, 43-23, in the quarter.
It was another tough shooting day for the Wildcats as they were held to 25.9 percent. Fordham shot just 35.8 percent, the eighth game the 'Cats have held an opponent to 36 percent or under on the season.
The Rams held a 41-39 edge on the glass, but the Wildcats had a game-high 16 offensive rebounds.
The Wildcats wrap up their three-game road trip with a visit to Philadelphia, Pa., to face La Salle next Wednesday, Jan. 6.
GAME NOTES: This was the third meeting between the two schools ….
